Spinal Surgery

    Hi all,

Just looking for some advice. I have very strong sciatica pain caused by arthritis in my lower spine. I have had all the injections and to no avail. My only option now is surgery. My consultant recommends Poynton Pain Clinic in the Mater or Mister O`Sullivan in Cork.

My issue is that I have no insurance so will have to pay privately. I`m finding it nigh on impossible to get an estimate for the procedure as they will all say book a consult first (understandable I know) but I`m just looking for a ball park figure before I commit to one or the other, as the consult will cost between €200-300.

Anybody had a similar experience or advice to offer as regards costs?

    Cheers

Hi, did you get any more info re costs for the surgery?
I had lumbar surgery 2 years ago today actually( just realised the date ha!)...anyway, it was a microdiscectomy and decompression......my disc exploded basically. Had intense pain for 5 yrs or so and then started to lose feeling in my leg and foot. Surgery the only option.

I'm in Limerick, referred to Cork with insurance to George Karr...he works out of CUH. Has rooms on campus.
He's a neurosurgeon. An orthopedic surgeon or nuero can do those surgeries as if you have sciatica that is from the nerves being compressed either from bone or discs. In your case sounds like bone. My doc tried to get me to an ortho in Dublin but he was on hols!
1 & 1/2 hour surgery at 8 am left following day at 2 pm,

Got receipt from VHI week or 2 later......under 3000 euro....if I remember right. Less even I think

I like yourself, found it hard to find any info before hand re costs as I didn't think my insurance would cover me due to an pre excisting arthritic condition. I was panicking about costs.

When I saw the bill I was surprised.....thought it would be 10 grand or so.

I think the private clinics would be more expensive. The fact my guy uses a public hospital possibly made it cheaper.
Hes really good and a very nice man.

Cheers for coming back to me MissGriff & ....

Yes I managed to get an appointment in the Poynton Clinic for next week so fingers crossed. Still no estimate on cost as they have to take a look first. From what I`ve heard from several other forums I `m expecting in and around the 5k mark but sure I`ll find out soon enough.

    Thanks again.

    Your welcome.

I don't post much but was having a browse yesterday and spotted your's. When I saw you only had 1 reply thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I hope it works out for you anyway.... Both the costs and the actual surgery if you have it.
The pain can be unbearable and no one should have to live like that.

Also if you claim health expenses through PAYE revenue, you can add on his consultation fees to your others eg GP, prescriptions etc , and at least get a few quid back.

Let me know you get on.

I paid €7,196 for a single level discectomy and decompression in a private hospital in January of this year.

Well, we got the surgery done in the Mater Private, consultant was Mr Poynton. It was a double spinal compression in the end and cost just over €8k. It went really well and total pain relief so far...so fingers crossed. Mr. Poynton was great and straight up about the operation, no flaffing about.

Thanks for the comments and info.

    Cheers
