We are living in an older house where the gable wall borders a lane into a housing estate behind us. We would like to fit EWI, but obviously this would encroach on the lane. I assume the council own the lane, so would it be sufficient to obtain planning permission before commencing work?

You cannot get planning permission unless you have agreement from the land owner. You may have to contact the Council and ask for permission to oversail the boundary. My guess would be that they will say no.

On another note, I wouldn't want my EWI overhanging into a laneway. What happens if kids bounce balls of it, bikes scrape by it, damage in general effects the insulation to your home.
