Self Build While Abroad - Mortgage

Has anyone done this OR doing it at the moment with a mortgage or is it remotely possible? Everything I am reading online is telling me banks won't allow it even with a project manager or architect managing the build? If we were to start building and then move home, is possible to get a mortgage to complete the property?…
