Current employer reference

    Just a query as this is a first for me, I've been offered a permanent position in the public sector, but they've requested a reference from my current employer, is that the norm?

    Absolutely normal. Usually look for three.

    Yep. Up to three is the norm and one should be a current employer.

    Ring the HR department and speak with them about it. They understand you won't want to rock the boat by giving notice etc before you accept the position. Is there no one in the current job that will give you a reference at all?

    My company doesn't supply references. HR will supply information on work duration and dates etc.

    It's only going to get harder for the public service to fill vacancies, as more and more companies totally refuse to give references.

    Had to do this previously for public sector.

    Just ask your HR department for a Statement of Employment setting out your start date and role. No need to mention a reference

    Same here, most large companies will give tombstone information only.

    Here worked r3nu4l, 1 Jan 2002 - 31 Dec 2005.

    The reason I ask is that they have already completed three references for me, all used by me before so I know they're OK. The company I work for is small so we don't have HR, so when I hand in my notice its to the owner, so understandably I'm hesitant!

    That can be tricky okay. Heard of cases where current employer can be a bit spiteful with reference

    It's usually more of a questionaire to be filled out. About 8 or so questions with most of it yes / no answers. Are they reliable, of sober habits etc. They normally look for a current work one, but if you ring the HR department and explain it's a small company and owner is of the resentful type he'll make it difficult / awkward or you don't want rock the boat whilst you work your notice etc. They should be fine once they have some references for your file.
