    Hi there,
I'm a teacher but am taking a career break for a working holiday in Canada, leaving at the end of August 2018.
Does this mean in spring 2019 I could claim a tax refund for 2018, and could I expect it to be a decent chunk of money (annual salary is a little under €50k)

When I left, I could (and did) claim tax back for that current year. I should have left in December and not feckin’ April

Yes, it can be quite a chunk of money

Oh so I wouldn't even have to wait til early 2019? Even better! Is there much involved?

This going back about 7 years but no, from what I remember I presented myself at the tax office with some proofs of identity. The lady at the counter processed it there and then. Surprisingly easy, quickest €5k I ever earned :)

As the tax year runs January to December you probably wouldn't have received anything back as the refund is based on used credits and/or rate and for the year. You would have been taxed correctly up to April. Your refund then would have been in relation to the unused credits and/or rate band up to the end of December that year.
