supplement yearlings on grass

I put some yearling angus to grass over the weekend(outwintered). They were sick of silage and looking to get through the neighbors hedge. There is only 6 of them with a run of 16 acres and the seem quite content. However an older neighbor of mine says it is a really bad idea to put them out this early in this type of weather. as the can develop problems like scour and stomach issues. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Should I supplement the grazing?

They'll be fine, esp if they were outwintered, weather won't bother them at all. Maybe give a shake of meal if you want so they are used to coming to you and it will be easier to move them if the ground gets too wet, it's damage to the ground id be worried about

This early? What does he consider late, the middle of June?

I think it more the frosty damp weather we have. The ground is in really good condition. Closed since October.

If they were outwintered the weather now won’t effect them at all.

A bit of meal would help, little extra if we get a cold wet spell.

We have stock out all winter and moved them to fresh grass Saturday.

I let out 15 yearling heifers last Tuesday. They were getting a kgof meal since housing till New Year’s Day. I was wondering should I give w bit of meal too. They are on a nice cover of grass but spent the first two days walking the hedges so I gave them a bale of silage. They are not that interested though. One old neighbour said this is he best time to give them meal. I’m between minds at the minute

Don't give them any meal! The meal will just replace grass they should be grazing and also they will just be hanging round waiting for meal and uneasy till they get it. They'll be much more settled and content without it.

You mean they are the greatest codding baxtards of all time. Sneak up and they will be grazing away to their hearts content. Stick your head above the cover and they ball and roar like they werent fed in a month!!

Dose them in a few weeks, to kill any over wintered Ostertagia Type 2. The grass will be plenty for them, waste of money on ration. Best use at the back end of the year as grass deteriorates.
