Masculine Laundry Detergent

I'm looking to get a new laundry detergent. Ideally I would like a capsule I can just through in the wash but I find all the ones are very feminine/artificial smelling.

I don't want anything overpowering, but something that will keep my clothes smelling good. Any suggestions?

Let's keep responses to serious ones please.

I get the cheapo lidl/aldi ones. About 2 quid for a box and the clothes dont smell of anything after.

For the towels, etc, Tide pods, orange packet. Bought a box of them a while back. I won't need to buy more for probably another year :D Box has 120 pods. I use two pods every week or two, so have loads left.

For the black clothes, I use Woolite Darks Liquid Laundry Detergent. And as I've only a few non-black clothes, they get thrown in as well. All good.

But here's the catch; it doesn't matter what you use to wash it with. Throw in a sheet of bounce into the dryer when you're giving your clothes a post-wash spin, and that'll make your clothes smell nice.

That sounds nice. What do you use?

Use any detergent, it's the conditioner at the end of the wash that will give your clothes the smell you want. I'm a fan of Comfort in the blue bottle. Pleasant smell and not too girlie.

Ariel and Peril both smell very 'gender neutral' fresh to me. The different formats don't smell the same however. E.g. Ariel Pods smell lovely, Persil pods offend my nose. However, Persil liquid smells great and Ariel liquid reminds me of car air freshener.
Comfort Pure smells pretty good too as a conditioner.

I just stay away from intense floral fragrances not because they're 'girlie' just because I have no desire to smell like a fake flower.

If you want very little smell at all, try Ecover.

Don't opt for either Lavender nor TeaTreeOil scented, sure the newspaper the other week said those oils in particular, were 'endocrine disruptiors'

As others suggested a rag soaked of old spice thrown in the dryer, should fix any flowery stuff.

The one thing that annoys me in Ireland and also the UK is that you can't seem to get unscented cleaning products very easily.

Most of Europe and North America has versions of mainstream laundry products with no or very little scent.

Does it really matter what the detergent smells like? I’d say it smells like detergent for an hour or 2 after putting them on. After that urs more likely to smell like your deodorant or your environment.

Without putting your face right up to it, I doubt you’d smell the detergent. The main time I smell the detergent is when clothes are drying indoors.

Every now and again you smell someone’s laundry detergent as they walk past. It’s probably because they used far too much

Frankly, I've never had any detergent leaving any pleasant smell on clothes - especially when drying inside as it's often the case in Ireland due to the instability of the weather (put clothes out in the sun, go for grocery shopping, 15 minutes later it's lashing down...). It's the conditioner, if you use any, that leaves the pleasant smell on them, and to be fair I find that most are very neutral in terms of "gender", if that's even a thing. I personally like the Lenoir / Tesco blue ones (I can't tell if there's any difference between the two, so I get whatever they have).

Don't underestimate the importance of a fresh smell in clothes, especially shirts - it's what gets released as soon as they come in contact with body heat; Some detergents have sulfates in them, which may cling on the clothes even if they're not immediately visible; As soon as they come in contact with the humid heat of the skin, they release funky smells that while entirely harmless, aren't exactly pleasant not "socially acceptable" (in other words, people will think you stink).

On a related issue, I was shopping yesterday and noticed that in Tesco some of the bottles of Ariel were now €20 !?!

Since when has laundry detergent been 20 quid?!

I'm beginning to suspect that the prices have risen in the UK in GBP because of weak sterling, but that we're getting the special Irish price which is Euro calculated by using some fixed exchange rate. So, despite the fact that our prices should be unchanged, or even decreased, they're actually going up.

I hope the Irish supermarkets actually take stock of this and seek some new suppliers i.e. either break the UK link on the distribution chains and source these products at their true source e.g. Ariel is made in France or, if they can't do that, start bringing in Henkel detergents from the continent.

    We're being absolutely ripped off.

I always find it's this kind of stuff, rather than the food, that really puts grocery bills through the roof here.

Some of the "brand" detergents have always been outrageously pricey - if you check the tablet format Ariel, I believe it's around 9 Euro, while the Tesco own brand is like 2.50...
