Electric Power Source for Off Grid Farm

My father owns a small farm and is currently looking for some kind of power source that will supply the farm with electricity. The farm has never been connected to the national power grid, but we recently looked into the possibly of having the farm connected to the grid and received a quote from ESB of over €5000! He won't require a huge electric supply to the farm, he just needs enough supply to run 6 or 7 low energy lights to light up 2 small sheds while feeding cattle during the winter months.

We've also looked into alternatives to having the farm connected to the national power grid, like wind turbines and solar panels. Would anyone have previous experience of these products?

Any constructive feed back or suggestions would be greatfully appreciated.

A cheap, small generator would be an easy solution

Basically a Li-ion pack, that he charges at home and takes with him to the farm. 12v DC led lights.
    What about water and fencer?
