Ford Focus alternative

    Hi all

I'm looking for advice on what kind of car I should buy for my family. We currently have an 07 Focus which we bought for 5 grand 3 years ago. I had hoped we could get a 2010 or 2011 focus now for around the same price or slightly more but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Could anyone suggest any other cars that have roughly the same size interior as a focus which would be inside my budget? I'm looking to spend around 5,500 plus whatever I can get for a trade in, so I guess around 6,500 total.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Are you looking Petrol or diesel?
Focuss are among the cheapest cars in that class, so you might not necessarily save by picking a different model.

Petrol. It's just for city driving so I suppose a smaller engine would be better too.

I think I'm going to have to resign myself to spending more than I had hoped so any suggestions of cars around the same size would be great. I've just been surprised that cars which look bigger from the outside actually don't have a larger interior than the focus so was wondering what the alternatives are without losing interior space.

One big problem you’ll face with the Focus is that most are diesel post 08, and the petrol ones will have higher tax than your 07.

Have a look at the Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed petrol. they’re not going to be any cheaper than a Focus, but at least they would be better suited to your city driving than a diesel and are more powerful than your Focus from the same engine size.

If your own car is going then the notion of spending 4-5k to go from an 11 year old car to a 8 year old car doesn’t really stack up, unless you just fancy a change.

Just so you know that the petrol engines offered in the Focus circa 2009/2010 were not very efficient. Both the 1.4 and 1.6 petrol had the same highish tax rate after 2008 when motor tax was based on co2 rather than engine size. So a 2009/2010 petrol Focus if you can find one here would cost €570 to tax per year.
