    Hi,
Pls could somebody recommend a good mattress which wouldnt make me overheat at night? The thing is we are renting and our mattress is soooo bad so ive been trying different toppers at 1st trying to avoid having to buy a mattress ....from a very expensive eve memory foam topper to some quilted topper and other very cheap foam topper......they all made me overheat at night very badly but my partner didnt have that issue. Funnily enough i am the one who has to have a hot water bottled and 2 duvets in winter unlike him....but this heat comes from the mattress underneth me and i just couldnt bare it. So we couldnt keep any of them and have to buy a mattress after all.... but i am really scared....none of the ones in our price range have a free trial and return.( i think just one without all these extra comfort layers, firmer, traditional mattress would be fine, since i never new i had this problem before trying these toppers. Did anyone have this problem as well and found a good mattress they would recommend please?.....we need a king size and i think id only like to pay around 500 i think. Thank you very much .)

Generally speaking, anything foam isn't going to make you feel cooler.

The heat doesn't come from the mattress. It comes from your body. The problem is that the heat doesn't have anywhere to escape to.

Modern mattresses are by and large made of foam. Some of them have springs in them too, but there is a lot of foam.

More expensive mattresses tend to have more natural materials on top, to make you feel a bit cooler. But these materials are more expensive. You might not be able to find a mattress that really solves your problem for your price range. (Though you might, but what you gain in coolness you might lose in coolness.

Maybe one of these would help? https://mccabespharmacy.com/cool-mattress-topper-bed-pad-70-x-90-cm.html

Yeah thats what i figured out, thanks.....so there arent new mattresses made without any extra comfort layer? Our old mattress was absolutely fine, so i wouldnt mind getting something similar....can you still buy just plain firm open sprung mattresses?

Don't the cooltex mattresses have a gel layer in the mattress along the lines of the product you linked.

I do remember trying one when mattress shopping and it was noticeably cooler than the other foam/pocket-sprung mattresses. I don't remember the specific brand though.

Yes you are right, this is a specialised foam. I am talking in general about the regular polyurethane foam and memory foam. Fancier foams are going to add € to the cost of the product of course.

The 1st topper was eve and was supposed to be breathable and have some cooling layer as well....really comfy and great quality..well for229 euro i should be.....but it was the worst of them all.( i just want some normal oldfashined mattress pls.)

There are plenty open coil mattresses out there. They are quite inexpensive. For example:

http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/mattresses/mattresses-toppers/hamarvik-sprung-mattress-medium-firm-dark-beige-art-80258722/ - but there are similar available in lots of places.

My concern is whether the foam padding that is laid over the springs will cause a problem for you. Go and try some out I suppose, and spend at least 5 or 10 minutes lying down on them to get a feel for it.

Thats exactly it...they all seem to have some form of padding added and unfortunately i am pretty faraway from a lot of places so really unable try them out.( and to be honest 5 or 10 mins wouldnt do much for me as i found all my topper super comfy at 1st and only found it a problem at night. So i was kind of hoping to find someone who had the same problem and found the solution/the right mattress for it. Thank you all soooo much for your contribution and suggestions i really appreciate it.)

Well, there has to be some sort of padding, otherwise the springs will dig into you obviously!

In general, a pocket sprung mattress is a better mattress than the ones with the coil.

The question is what the padding is made of.

An example of a mattress that might suit you is this. Look at the materials that are in it. I know it is beyond your price point, but it gives you an idea what is available. Of course, there are lots of other places you can buy a mattress.

I got a wool matress topper and duvet from Baavet and find them excellent

I know it does ....i meant the extra layers on top which a lot of them seem to have....anyway it came out wrong☺
Thanks for your suggestion...i have actually just been looking at that one and it sounds like the best option since its filled with all natural fibres. They even have 90 day trial period which is great

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭antoinolachtnai

90 day trials are all well and good, but if you decide you don't like it, will they pick it up? That mattress is massive and won't really fold. How would you get it back to the shop?!

I am not knocking it, I have two friends who bought this mattress and they are very happy with it and I'm sure you would be too. But in practice it is not that easy to collect on these guarantees.

Thanks ...ive checked them out...now i only have to email them and ask about possible returns of used and unliked products. Ive lost some money already with my toppers so need to be careful now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 Cherokeeska

Youre absolutely right. I have already been chatting to ikea and they would pick it up but for the same cost as delivery...69 euro.......i am in kerry.....so it would end up costing me quite a bit🙄

I would highly recommend mattressman.co.uk. i I bought a pocketsprung, natural fibre mattress from them at Christmas.

There are vents on the side of the mattress so that air can circulate and keep things fresh and cool. It is the most comfortable mattressman I have ever bought. Delivery only cost £24 from the UK. It was far to expensive to but the same calibre of mattress here.

They have a sale on at the moment and they also sell "seconds" matresses where they might only have a scuff mark on the corner or a slight tear..but the savings because of this is sometimes huge.
Have a look at trust pilot to see genuine reviews of their mattresses and service.

Good luck with your search..I spend months finding the right mattress..worth the wait.

memory foam traps the heat, we just changed ours to a new mattress
    got one of these

fantastic comfort, no more sweating even with our heaviest duvet

    apparently gel mattresses breathe better
