HSE Mat Leave

    Hi all,

My wife is a midwife in a HSE hospital. Been working there about 9 months now.

We are planning on starting a family in the next few months, and I wanted to check what the story is with Mat Leave in the HSE (beyond the statutory I mean).

Also, if she was to move hospitals to another HSE hospital in the next few months, does that counter for paid Mat Leave go back to zero, or is it treated as the same overall employer, etc?

    Thanks a million.

Your wife will have to check her contract of employment with the HSE to see if she will be paid during her maternity leave, unless the contract states otherwise, maternity leave is unpaid.

Your wife will be entitled to maternity benefit, this is a Social Welfare payment and has nothing to do with HSE, your wife fills out the relevant forms. This leave/benefit applies no matter which hospital your wife works in, it does not "reset" because she moves jobs, it is continuous for the statutory duration of the leave.

Thanks for that. So, benefit aside, if she moves to a new HSE hospital, the Mat Leave is essentially reset to whatever the hospital decides to put in its contract?

"All employees on maternity leave are entitled to basic pay plus normal fixed
allowances less any maternity benefit to which they may be entitled on foot of
their social welfare contributions. This does not include additional amounts
due to night work, overtime, shift work, working unsociable hours, and
    standby or on-call allowances."

    Well that sounds promising.
