Insignia engine knackered

Last Saturday a warning flashed on my dashboard telling me "oil pressure failure, turn off engine". Anything to do with oil I turned off engine as soon as I could, rang my insurance and had them tow it back to my mechanics garage. I was told on Tuesday engine is knackered, the oil pump had gone and the engine was done for. There was only 130,000km on it, a 2010 2.0 ctdi 130bhp. Now looking at a €2k bill to replace with a reconditioned engine. I've since looked up on this problem and found it's actually a known problem with the Insignia's of that time, oil pump failure that is. So, just asking had anyone ever experienced this before and is it worth approaching Opel?

That seems to be a growing problem with that engine. This months Car Mechanics Magazine has an article about one such afflicted Insignia and the cause is down to a defective seal in the oil pump pickup. It too resulted in a damaged engine.

I don't know what Open (or Vauxhall in the UK) did by way of addressing the costs of this for affected vehicles. But no harm in asking them though

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting Opel to cover anything on an 8 year old car at this stage. Unfortunately Insignas of that vintage are really plagued with numerous expensive problems.

Its a very common problem and has been well documented. Opel/Vauxhall are fully aware of it however I don't think you'll get any joy approaching them about it unless you owned the car from new and have a full Opel service history.

my brother-in-law bought one of these recently despite me telling him that it is one model he should definitely avoid. Is there any preventative work that can be done prevent this occurring?

Get the oil pickup seal replaced

It would be interesting to know if other cars with the same engine have similar issues. Later incarnations of the Fiat Bravo and Suzuki SX4 use it, although the former is a 160bhp..

    M32 gearbox is also problematic.

    Yes, they did.

But it was only Opel/Vauxhall that fixed it by simply reprogramming the ECU to hide the early symptoms and don't show low oil pressure warning at startup.

How long did this problem last for and would Insignia's of 2013 upwards be affected?

The facelifted ones from 2013 are supposed to be more reliable. They also got new engines in early 2015.

Would they be decent enough from 2015 on? They seem like good value

If it makes you feel any better, i paid €3k for a reconditioned engine 6 months ago, so €2k isn't exactly robbing you.
