I am using a figure of eight knot to make a loop. When i make the loop the knot brakes when I put pressure on it. Is the line too old that I am using. I have it a few years but it is kept in the dark. I am using both nylon and flurocarbon. 6lb breaking strain.

What type of leader? Some folks swear by a nail knot - heavy mono or leader direct to fly line. Did so myself for a few years, bit fiddly and seems OTT.

Now I exclusively use Roman Moser mini connectors (red ones) and a loop to loop to connection to either a thread/fluro furled leader or a mono tapered leader.

Furled leaders "normally" come with a loop, some tapered leaders do, if not tie a perfection loop. Plenty of online videos/animations showing both nail knot and perfection loop tyings, practice on something very heavy (washing line).

Perfection loop and then loop to loop.
