Heading over to Lisbon in a few weeks for 4 days and currently looking at AirBNB. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions in terms of areas to stay in? Would like to be near the things to do, public transport, and preferably safe :D

Try this apartment on air bnb, just back excellent location in the downtown beside the elevator. Right beside a large supermarket.

Can't speak for the apartment but it's a great area. Right in the middle of the old quarter with easy access to the metro and the Light Rail to cascais.
Try get across the bridge to Caparica. It has a great beach.

Personally I would find a quiet area to stay, it can be noisy (in my experience) in the downtown area. Lisbon's public transport is great and inexpensive, taxis are good value also.
I found it a very safe city, people annoy you trying sell drugs in certain areas, but not aggressive.
Try and get the train to Sintra, beautiful.

We are just back from Lisbon and I would totally recommend the hotel we stayed in which was called Hotel 7. It’s in Rua Aurea which is right in downtown. It’s a beautiful hotel with a great breakfast. There’s no noise whatsoever. It’s about a 5 minute walk to Praca de Commerico.

I never bother with hotels in Lisbon. Apartments are a far better option but given the time of year a balcony isn't a must have although I love having the option of having one there. Adds to the experience imo.

Chiado is probably the nicest area to stay in.
Biarro Alto is the party area so not the greatest if you want to sleep before 4-5am.

If you plan to do a lot of day trips Cais Do Sodre is v handy and cheaper than most of the other areas.

For a more authentic flavour of Lisbon area Baixa is another option.

Can highly recommend this place, very central but in a quiet area.

I stayed in Bairro Alto area recently - central and close to nightlife. How noisy it is depends on where you stay obviously.

Thanks for the advice. Felt I should provide an update.

Ended up staying at an Airbnb in Alfama beside the Pantheon (great view!) and very close to where the Thieves Market is on a Saturday and Tuesday. Unfortunately I can't get the link to the place in question right now - if you see it on Airbnb, the main picture is of the Pantheon from the bedroom window.

Great location, near to the train station (where there's a supermarket) and close to restaurants and bars. Easy to walk in and out of the centre of Lisbon. Had the large place to ourselves, clean and tidy, and they left us a bottle of wine on arrival!
