The left love affair with Russia

What is it with old lefties like Jeremy Corbyn and their love for Russia?

Russia is a very right-wing country with vastly different attitudes to immigrants and social issues than what the left wants, yet people like Corbyn continue to give them the benefit of the doubt. Like many leftists, he is living in the past still trying to fight Thatcherism. We have a few Solidarity members here who have a soft spot for Russia too, oddly. Can any of the politically correct brigade explain to me why Russia has the support of many of your fellow travellers? (other than that it was communist three decades ago)

Cognitive dissonance. Similar with all the Cuba love, great for other people to live in but never in a million years would they live there.

Most "lefties" I know would be very anti-Russia, or at least anti-Putin.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

If that is the case it is even more reason for Corbyn to stop supporting it.

Maybe it's just a totalitarian thing and not a left right thing.

O yeah, remember Putin was going to install Le Pen in France, Wilders in the Netherlands and someone in Austria who's name I can't remember.
The media told us that Putin wanted to break up the EU. None of them even got close to being elected.

Corbyn doesn't support Russia, he knows the media could destroy his career in five minutes.

If it becomes the rock the nice Mr. Trump perishes on, they'll love every inch of Russia and why shouldn't they.

Corbyn doesn't love Russia in particular, he's just being hammered in a ridiculous manner by the media and now people are making out he's some Putin apparatchik.

Maybe in the 80s but I would have thought Cuba was now the equivalent in modern times.

And the far left. They promoted Jill Stein and Sanders during the 2016 US election.

They're basically helping out both extremes in an effort to sow discord and get people at their throats.

Painting an awful lot of people with the same brush their aren’t you? So many straw man arguments from right wingers on boards and reddit these days. Your post starts with a false pretense and then you go and apply that false pretense to anyone who holds left wing views. Do you not see how illogical that is?

Russia is the original... they wanted social harmony and equality. And they tried something very grand in that respect, with socialism... but ultimately it was a disastrous failure!

Many lefties still view them as the motherland, if you will, of the big socialism (pipe) dream!

Trotskyism still holds some sway over the minds of many liberal intellectuals.

I don't think the left love Putin, just possibly the more fringe elements who are in the minority thankfully who have a very childlike attitude "they annoy the West so they must be great".

Plenty on the hard right like Putin also for equally immature reasons.

I think you've nailed it there. I remember plenty of people like that in university at the turn of the century. There's very few who don't grow out of it though.

Yep. They view Putin up as protector of white Christianity. That view has become more mainstream over the last few years.

Are you getting this idea that Corbyn "loves" Russia from the same media sources who tried to say he was a Soviet spy a few weeks ago?

You might want to stop reading the a mail and express. He is very critical of the Russian government, he's not not gung-ho about escalation of diplomatic tensions before facts have been established.

It amazing how it ignored the DNC rigged the election for Hilary and bought the election for her. Since it not happening in Russia it's ignored.

Even for the Democratic Party, the past few weeks have been bizarre. First, Donna Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, published excerpts of a forthcoming book in which she says that after she took over the Democratic National Committee, she investigated “whether Hillary Clinton’s team had rigged the nomination process” through the DNC, and discovered evidence that they did. “I had found my proof and it broke my heart,” she wrote.

In the aftermath of Brazile’s bombshell, Sen. Elizabeth Warren was asked if she “agree[d] with the notion that it was rigged?” “Yes,” she replied.

In short, because its not the united states. Knee jerk reaction among that particular "crowd" (I dislike using lazy terms like the left and the right) is that US = bad, anyone opposed to the US = good. Case in point, in the 80s the saddam regime came under much condemnation from none other than george galloway, who would rather quickly reverse his tune and became a leading critic of the iraq war following gulfs one and two.

Its a pity the West didnt copy Russia's foreign policy, dont get involved unless your invited or wont make the situation a million times worse.

Who’s ignoring it? The DNCs activity was widely reported all across the media. If they committed crimes why aren’t they being investigated and charged? Surely the GOP controlled justice dept would be keen?

The DNC is now blaming Russia for the failed election of Hilary. Tried every which way for a year to find excuses for her loss.

They rigged the election so Hilary beat Bernie. Bernie is a democratic a socialist the GOP does not care about him.
