Is it adobe reader you are using, or is it adobe acrobat standard or similar? Adobe Reader doesn't allow you to edit files, or at least it doesn't really. You can add little annotations to the file, but not change and edit it.

Really whoever gave you the file to begin with should have given it to you in a format that was editable without needing expensive software to do so. Such as a word file or similar.

If you do have the software to edit the file, and you do edit pdfs regularly, this error doesn't tell us enough to go off really.

Alternatively, it’s possible that it would be quicker and easier to try a different reader.  Adobe software apparently works happily with many people’s systems, but maybe yours isn’t one of them.  With my (Windows Vista) computers Adobe Reader was ok in the early days, but became more and more of a prima donna over time (frequent refusals and errors, constant interruptions from pop ups demanding an update, updates failing, more & more space and processing power used).  There are (free) alternatives that do everything you’re likely to need.

I expect there’s a choice of good ones, but the only one I know about is Foxit Reader, as it was the first one I tried, and it’s “just worked” for me ever since.  There’s a description and some reviews of it here at Cnet (this link doesn’t start a download - that button’s on the page if you want it). http://download.cnet.com/Foxit-Reader/3000-18497_4-10313206.html

Once Foxit was up and running I uninstalled Adobe Reader; that freed up some resources, but in my case I also had to expunge everything Adobe (that I could find without messing with Windows system files), in order to stop some continuing interruptions!

yeah there are plenty of lighter alternatives to adobe reader which I always found slow to load and slow to load docs.
foxit is fine but there are plenty of others.
some of the free alternatives allow for annotations/notes which some people may find useful.

when you install whatever one you choose make sure you associate pdf files with this software.

to do this, find a pdf file in file explorer, right-click "open with" and pick the software you want to use.
tick the tick box that says something like "always use this program for this type of file" and you're good.
