Calling somebody Granddad/Granny/brother/sis/cousin when they aren't related at all?

My sister rang me a few days ago, she said "Granddad died"
I was shocked, I asked when it happened, then gave out that my dad never bothered to ring & tell me.
Then she says, "No, not our granddad. Granddad, as in Sue's granddad"

I get that she is good friends with this girl but granddad isn't her granddad!

Why do some people do this!?
I just don't get it, Everyone has to be a cousin or an auntie or a granny!!

In India, everyone your parents age or thereabouts is an Auntie or Uncle, and any relative or close friends child around your own age, no matter how obscure the connection, is a cousin.

It bugs me too, whenever I say half brother or sister I'm tutted at and told "they're sisters and brothers". No they're not, what's wrong with being technically correct?

Your sister sounds really ‘special’ She should be cherished and not ridiculed on public forums.

I don’t know anyone stupid dumb that refers to other people’s relatives by their related name (granny, grandad, cousin, uncle etc)

My friends name their dog 'grampa'. I think it's an adorable name.

Have heard similar from older men in the pub referring to their wife, pulling a twenty from their sock, "mammy doesn't know about this!"

    Sad carry on really.

One of my childhood friends was brought up with his mother, her siblings and his grandparents in their house. His uncle was close in age to him so often people assumed they were brothers and his granny was his mother. Whenever someone would ask him, he would explain it by saying "she's me nana-ma" which was quite sweet.
