    Hi All

If a 3rd learner permit expires July 2017 and you don't have a test booked. How do you go about renewing the Learner permit.

do you have to do the Theory test again?

I wouldn't be totally up to speed with some of the new rules but I'd imagine you just apply for the test and then apply for another permit showing proof of test application. I don't think you need to go back to the start again.

When you book a test it asks you for the number on your licence, but the licence is expired.

The number they want is your driver number and is basically your identity number like your PPS number - it will never change. The permit number is not relevant to your renewal. Any expired permit will be renewable on application with a valid practical test booking for 5 years after it expires (no theory test again unless it's expired for 5 years or more).

You say that the expired permit is your third? Have you previously taken a test? Or did you have to make a test booking to get your last permit because if you still have a valid test booking (ie you didn't no-show for a test), you can use it again this time. If you took and failed a test prior to the last permit expiring, you can get a 2 year permit this time instead of a 1 year permit you get for applying with a test booking only (the rule is you can apply with a valid test booking or a test outcome [fail] within the last two years).

There was no tests done in the past. They were all cancelled.

Can I book a test with the expired licence number and then renew the licence?
