Am I just being sentimental or have fish portions in fish & chip joints become gradually smaller and smaller? I remember not so long ago the portion would be sticking up out of the top of the bag or hanging off the plate. Now it seems to be the size of a smart phone.

Do you ever notice how the size of smartphones seem to be getting bigger and bigger, years ago you'd easily fit one in the palm of your hand. These days you need two hands to work one...

In fairness there's a range of choice with smart phones, I can't say to the guy in the takeaway, 'make sure it's a large one now, think phablet, not iphone 5s'

What really gets my goat is the shrinking and decreasing quality of fish fingers since the early 90's

The smaller ones tend to be lower spec.
Something with decent speed and can fit comfortably in your pocket I'd definitely buy.

and wagon wheels from when I was a kid, they were deffo bigger when I was little :pac:

what I don't like these days are supermarket portions for battered/breaded fish, 1 is too small but two is being a bit piggy, the chipper size is perfect. As supermarkets normally sell them in 4's it seems to be a gimmick to keep the price low so families will buy them.

Don't have a prob with that, I'd easily eat the two portions you get in a pack. Or else you can just keep one in the freezer, when I go to the chippers or a restaurant I want a piece that looks like someone has been posing with it for a photograph, not something you'd throw back in the water.

COD numbers are seriously depleated so they use dogfish a lot which is a smaller fish.

Pfft dogfish, next you'll be trying to tell us there's such a thing as a catfish.

I agree but a chipper/restaurant is meant to be a treat so over sized portions are fine however the fish is about right. 1 fish portion from the freezer section of a supermarket just looks sad , for me about 1.5 current sized portions is about right.

In an effort to cut costs and increase profits, businesses are reducing product sizes and increasing prices. I have noticed it over the last few years.

If you have been keeping the quality street tins every year since the 80's then you are now the proud owner of some awesome Russian nesting hexagons

I've heard the proper name for them is Matrynoshka tins.

The above scene is taking place inside the 70s tin. Which has been
kitted out with a nice deep pile carpet. And wired for electricity (from the local grid powering the whole 60s quality street tin town)

Cod portions have always been around that size, an actual cod on the other hand was and still is massive on a plate :D

I'm not having it, in previous years the portion you got was more or less the fish minus the head and tail. I'm a hungry beast and I remember struggling to finish them. Now it's not much larger than a fish burger, I think there's some f**kers in Spain or Portugal sitting down to dinner with our proper size fish portions.
