Extend maternity leave with parental leave?

Hi
I am due to go on maternity leave soon, I am going to take the full 42 weeks. I woul like to extend my maternity leave with parental leave so I can be off work until the baby is 1.
Can I do this?

Do I need to get my manager to approve this or can I just give them notice this is what I am doing?

You can ask but it’s compeltely the company’s perogatve to give this to you. They can turn you down twice before they have to give a reason and even then they decide how you take it depending on what works for them

Most companies are flexible and with my first I took it when I returned to work as 1 day per week. On my second I took it in one chunk to extend my leave.

Remember you will accrue holidays while on maternity and unpaid leave so you will have more than the 42 weeks to take before parental leave
