EV/Hybrid recommendations

    Hi All,

Currently looking at EV/hybrid options and wondering what would be best suited for me. Plan would be to purchase in next 9-12 months.
My commute is 60 miles a day on a mix of dual carriageway and national roads.
Coupled that with the odd weekend to herselfs home place in Waterford from cork city and other random trips to Dublin or Limerick for matches.

What would people recommend as best option either new or second hand in either an EV or hybrid? Not got the money for a Tesla before anyone recommends one 😛

    Cheers
    Lfc

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Your timing is pretty good. There will be EVs later this year / early next year like the Hyundai Kona with an optional 64kWh battery that will have a realistic range of 470km for reasonable money. That's about twice the range current EVs have (apart from the Teslas)

Thanks for that! Had seen some talk on here about the Kona alright! That is a very decent range in fairness!

Are you looking for a car or a Crossover type vehicle?

    Do you have kids?

how random are the Dublin/Limerick trips?

OP, are you ready for full electric, or do you still want to have the ability to hope in your car and drive without worrying about charge?

Either or. Probably prefer a car but have nothing against a crossover!
No kids, likely won't be along for a couple of years yet!

Might be in Dublin once every 6 weeks or thereabouts, wouldn't use the trip as something to sway my decision though really if push came to shove.

Range of 470km that is mentioned above I'd definitely be happy with full electric. I think for much less in range than that I would need the a hybrid or phev for safety sake!

Have a look at Kona, if not for you the Niro will be out soon. The Kona is a compact Crossover and the Niro is a big bigger.

Hybrid is anything from Toyota, personally I don't like the interior. I have 2 friends who have bought top of range Toyota Hybrids(C-HR & Rav4). Both of the interiors are not great.

The Niro comes in hybrid or PHEV.

The Outlander PHEV is one of the top sellers. Buy second hand from UK, new in Ireland is mental money

Other option which is expensive is i3 REX, electric with petrol strap on :P

The Nissan Leaf 2 is out, but really better waiting for the 2019 model if buying new. Seems like a few issues with it.

VW eGolf 2017 is out, realistic range is 220km....one of the best electric cars available.....might be worth a look but it is expensive....trips to Dublin/Limerick would require planning......VW do have plans for new models(ID range) in 2019 but nothing concrete yet

Hyundai Ioniq would be similar to eGolf. They are talking about a larger battery version but no sign yet. If it came then it would suit perfect.

Renault Zoe 40, nice little car, is slow at top speed. I would class as similar to Leaf 2 but better in terms of charging.

All of them would have to be bought new.

Best value for money.....I would go for Outlander.....

Also, do you have housethat you can install charger? one of the main questions that should have been asked.

That car won't have a range of 470km though.

I'd be shocked if it did.

Thanks for the comprehensive information above. Yes I have the facility to install a charger.
I've just read a couple of reviews of the outlander with people seeming to get in the 40's for MPG. Would this sound right do you think?

Journalists don't usually get enough time with a car to get any statistically useful data regarding fuel economy, and may be biased against hybrids (or just bad at driving them efficiently). I'd say 40 MPG is the worst case scenario with no charging.

You can see figures here, based on 148 users: https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/31-Mitsubishi/280-Outlander.html?fueltype=6&powerunit=2

    4.25 l/100km = 66 MPG

But note there are two peaks in the "histogram", which suggests there is a big variance in fuel consumption (but very small amount averaging 40 MPG). With PHEVs it is very much dependent on how much of your driving you can do in EV mode.

I have a 2012 Prius Plug-in, and average about 80 MPG with 40% EV driving. Even though the EV range is small (about 15-16 km), I can utilise this every weekday with my short commute, and still do long trips (e.g. Cork-Belfast) without needing to charge.

Your 60 mile work trip is perfect for electric

The issue is the trips to Dublin/Limerick. At the moment the charger network is too unreliable to recommend an electric if you need to regularly use them.....

For that reason I would recommend a PHEV.

If it was me personally, I would find a way to go with the electric. I have and I love it. I saved over €1300 this year on fuel alone for 15k km. Not bad....but I dont need to use the public system.....

The Kona 64kWh? The WLTP range is 470km and I'd say that's realistic enough. The EPA range of Ioniq 28kWh is 200km, if you extrapolate that to 64kWh you get 460km

Many Ioniq owners get far more than 200km on one full charge. One German owner hypermiling got 370km. He would get 850km in Kona :)
