So I'm looking for a new car and the Mazda 6 is really catching my eye.
Only issue is there's hardly a single petrol one for sale in Ireland.

Donedeal throws up 2 post 2014 cars, one in Antrim and a private seller in Galway. There's 240 diesels for sale. What's the deal? Mazda aren't known for their stellar diesel engines, so what has every rushing out to buy (and sell) them?

Feel like I'm missing something here...

Chape tax so everyone was buying diesel....

In only now starting to change slightly as you will see more petrol cars then before 2008.
Not huge amounts mind just a bit more then over the last 10 years.

Mazda diesel engines aren't a great buy so going petrol is a better option.

Why not look over in the UK you would have a better selection.

    Look up Auto trader.co.uk

I have, there's a good selection and miles cheaper than here. Might tip over in the next few months and pick one up.

Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years? :D

Diesel dominates in that segment of car. Very little petrol models in that size of car are sold or offered here.

Must be, I've only ever bought hatches and always petrol. Time to book some flights!

There is an interesting review of passat 1.4tsi V mazda 6 petrol 2.0 on autoexpress and the passat won out on everything. The 6 is naturally aspirated so seems to lack the grunt you might expect from the bigger engine so hard to get it up to speed. I would seriously drive it b4 even considering it. Might seem good idea on paper but reality very different! Shame really.

Probably best to check what tax they will be before getting too committed to the idea.

They are in the €280 band. Reason they didn't sell Mazda only offered them here in the entry level spec saloon model only. Same as most Irish distributors. If they offer petrol versions at all they only have the lower power models even though in recent years CO2 levels were nearly as low.

Was seriously considering a 165bhp Estate Sport Nav version 2 years ago but there was only 1 up north and a handful in the UK. Test drove one 145bhp saloon that a Mazda dealer had imported. Quite liked it but they were looking for silly money for a 3 year old car.

Still would have been my first choice if my wife hadn't pushed for getting a 7 seater, best looking car in it's class.

You haven’t read Autoexpress before then?

By a small margin in all categories. I'd take the reliability of the mazda over the VW any day. the TSi engines are not the most reliable in the world by a long shot.

Really? Most Mazda 6’s sold were base saloon models, it wasn’t the spec that was the issue but the engine fuel. I seriously considered one but no dealer had a demo (or had ever sold one), the dealers said they would strongly encourage me not to order one as it would be a wedding ring in three years.

I remember posting on boards too and the response from everybody was to buy the diesel!

If you can import one cheaply I’d go with it but I wouldn’t expect to be able to sell it on easily in a couple of years as this class of car attracts diesel buyers

Maybe a one point they were offering the full range but when I enquired 2 years ago it was all they were offering. Their higher pcp rate made them much dearer as well. Loads of brands here don't offer their full engine range. Octavia 1.4/1.8tsi and leon 1.8tsi were originally available here but were discontinued when I enquired 2 years I was told they couldn't be ordered. Leon is available in 1.4tsi but only in 125bhp version and not in the estate.

Bought a 2008 2L petrol Mondeo zetec estate in 2011 for €10k diesels were going for 16/17k at the time for saving €320 a year in motor tax. Put up 160k km in 5 years and sold it for 3k. Only problems outside of normal consumables was a fuel line leak and bonnet release cable.

Really wanted another petrol estate but nobody was selling one I wanted. For my sins I ended up in a diesel 7 seater as the wife was pushing for the extra seats. It is a lot easier on the pocket though as I do do the mileage for diesel. Will hopefully have another petrol in time but in realty it will probably be an EV by then but with 200bhp plus by then I survive :D

I have a 2009 Mazda 6 petrol and can confirm they are rare as hens teeth. The thing is bullet proof and has given not a single ouch of trouble with the relatively low mileage, mine has 100k km, think Honda reliability. I'd go again for another Mazda 6 in a heartbeat (am looking to trade up currently) but the diesel engine comes with such a terrible reputation that I can't commit with that doubt hanging over my head.

Bottom line, petrol Mazdas are outstanding.

I have a 2010 Mazda 6 2.0 petrol. I had to go to the UK to get it as they never sold any of them here, all that was available was the 1.8 model. There's any amount of them in the UK so much that you can literally pick your spec, mileage and colour. I have the car 15 months now, have put 15k miles (bought it with 41k miles on the clock, one owner from new, full mazda service history and a folder full of receipts for every last thing ever bought for it from new) and it has never missed a beat, averages 32mpg on my 5mile (8km) commute and does 38-42mpg on long journeys.
