    Folks

How long am i looking at for well rotted manure to take effect and if i were to spread early next week how long would it take to sink in and disappear. The land im spreading on needs plenty of P and K due to being in Fodder beet for a few seasons and we reseeded summer of 2016. it took a while to come right but its getting there and iveTaken  soil samples and it did need the p and k but it is improving, im hoping this will boost it, along with fert. Anyway just wondering can i still put out dung and close up for silage in late may or early june. Will it break down enough??

    Thanks

    DD

Your looking at nigh on 10 weeks , should be no problem. Don't know what machine you are spreading with but majority of lumps should be no bigger than say a big grapefruit. Drive tractor a bit faster for a lighter spread if you're worried.

I think you need to wait till Autumn for dung, or you’ll need to apply it so lightly that it won’t be enough.

If u make dust of it when spreading should have no problems
Make sure all the chains and the heads on the end are in good shape and don't over fill the loads.

If a spell of dry weather ever comes after spreading, a run of chain harrow turns it into dust either

Agree with this. One of those einbock type harrows would be the ultimate job if you can get one

Thats a fact. This field got dung 2 wks ago and i broke it all up again yesterday. Got a very even spread and broke all the clumps out of it.

Something in the back of my mind about FYM using up nitrogen to break down when spread in springtime.Anyone else recall this?

Only if it’s fresh, well rotted stuff doesn’t
