CSO's 'Baby Names of Ireland' doesn't recognise the fada.

There's an article in the Irish Times about the CSO's 'Baby Names of Ireland' database which states that if you enter a name that has a fada/accent it returns a message 'no records exist'. You must enter the name without any diacritic for it to be found. Must say I find this surprising considering that Irish is the first language of the state not to mention that the CSO should be tasked with maintaining the proper standards with regards to the data it collects and offers to the public.

I do find it strange how Irish doesn't have an alternative spelling for the fada like German does for the umlaut, ö,ä,ü, can all be written as oe, ae, ue, it makes it much easier and correct, and would help stop the Brits from writing Eire all the time instead of Éire, which is a different word

Yep, a diacritic can fundamentally alter a word's meaning. The IT article mentions the two words 'resume' and 'resumé'. Both used widely in English but with totally different meanings due to the use of the diacritic.
