Thinking of buying a replacement car,
either bangernomics or bring in from the UK.

I stopped looking at the bangernomics thread as I wasnt planning on buying anything, Im weighing the options but after the snow a few problems with my car even though I think they could be fixable has me thinking I want an upgrade.

I'm looking at something practical and due to having a dog, looks like an estate, have seen some nice Volvo estates and thought they looked nice, wouldnt rule out another Skoda Octavia as mine has been reliable or maybe a Jag XJ or even an avensis, not sure the year but not too new, but no less than 2009. I still dont know whether to go for a diesel or not, saw a few 1.6TDi Octavias on autotrader, mine is a UK import in a a pre dpf 1.9TDi, does good mpg, plus it was better VRTwise when it got here, I probably dont do the mileage annually to justify one, but the tax and VRT would be cheaper and most of my journeys are a straight run on a motorway.

I was thinking UK as cars can have better spec, cleaner and lower mileage, here it seems most have had the arse driven out of them, edit maybe thats an exaggeration, it seems that most people have gotten good miles out of their cars and buying in the UK seems cheaper for what you are getting, I should add, I am considering an automatic as my wife can only drive an automatic even though she has her own car, so DSG in skoda? while she never drives my car it could come in handy from time to time, just wondering if there any disadvantages to certain autos in certain makes?

Any pitfalls? to avoid in any of the named manufacturers, good cars to go for or money pits to avoid?
