    Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.My car was recently declared a write off by my insurance company.It was sold for salvage and I received a cheque in the post today.The salvage buyer is looking for the log book to be sent to them.A stupid question but is this safe to do?Should it not go through the usual process of changing ownership?

    I wouldn't just handover book. There is a form for transferring to a motor dealer. You could possibly get them to fill out that and send it off to Shannon.

    They should provide you with a certificate of destruction in exchange

    Edit:..I was in the same situation and thats what i got and it was 100% above board.

    Once you've received the cheque you've passed ownership of the vehicle to your insurance company. Do NOT give the log book to a third party. If the insurance company have sold it on, let them deal with it.

    The cheque I have received is the salvage value from the salvage company.What should I do next?

    Yes give the log book to the salvage company but as a previous poster said ensure you get a cert of destruction from them if the car is a total write off

    It's very possible that the car might be repaired depending on the damage, by the salvage company and put back on the road. What would happen there regarding the logbook? If the car is never going back on the road then a certificate of destruction should be issued by the salvage company.

    Sorry, didn't realise this. Basically you've sold the car to the salvager. Transfer ownership in the normal way. Have a look at this and decide which category you fall into;

    I would think salvage companies are classed as dealers? Not sure though.
