Hi, Im being given a car, but the NCT is out since April 2017. If I take it does it mean that I have to get the NCT for 2017 to take it up to April 2018, and then get it NCT'ed again? And is it the same for the car tax? Thanks

I'm not fully sure but I think you only need the car NCTed for the current time period. When you get it done it should be valid for a year.

The car has to have been taxed for the entirety of its lifetime unless it was declared off the road before the tax had stopped being paid. Any tax that hasn't been paid will be considered owed and needs to be paid.

If the car is changing owner and documents sent to shannon then there is no back tax to be paid.

Note that you will have to tax it from the first day of the month you bought it in.
If you sign papers today (15th) you pay tax from 1st March

You can present your vehicle for NCT up to 90 days before its due date. If the next due date is April 2018 a certificate issued by testing it now would be valid for the same duration as if the 2017/2018 test had not been skipped.

The new owner is not liable for the previous owner's motor tax arrears. You are liable for motor tax from the beginning of the month ownership is transferred to you.

Yeah but the NCT expired in April 2017, would that mean that im in "arrears" regarding NCT or does it mean that once the change of ownership goes through that any NCT I get done is valid for a year after it is NCTed?

The nct is not a tax on your car it's a test for road worthiness, you can't be in arrears . The expiry date of your test is the same every year. when the test is done within 90 days of the expiry date the test will be valid until the same date of the following year. So for example if your nct expired on 1st April 2017 and you get it tested now it will be valid until 1st April 2019

There are no arrears on the NCT. If the full year was skipped and you are within 90 days what the expiry date would be then you are OK. Your car skipped 2017 but you are now testing it for the April 2018 to 2019 year. I had the same with one of my cars which was off the road last year. I got it tested 2 weeks ago and got a cert for 2019.
    You'll be fine.
