1. Why didn’t I receive notification of a supply interruption in my area?

Irish Water posts all confirmed supply disruptions on our website and our Twitter Page @IWCare. While we endeavour to provide advance notice of works, this is not always possible, for example, in the case of unplanned incidents such as burst water mains.

    2. Your website said works would finish at a specific time – why hasn’t my water come back?

Depending on the extent of the supply interruption, it can take up to 2-3 hours for full pressure to return to the entire network. We recommend that all consumers conserve water during maintenance and repair works in their area. You can find out more about water conservation here.

    3. What caused the widespread water outages after Storm Emma?

The aftermath of Storm Emma had a significant impact on the water network around the country as the extreme cold damaged water treatment plants and led to significant amount of pipe bursts. Local Authority crews worked to carry out repairs and restore supply as soon as possible.

On Monday 5 March across the Dublin region, the demand for drinking water outstripped the supply by 28 million litres which is the equivalent of the daily usage of the population of Cork City.

In Dublin, the condition of the pipes where the average age is 80 years, significant leakage and increased demand resulted in the need to reduce pressure overnight in a bid to allow reservoirs to fill and avoid daytime outages that would have a huge impact on homes, schools and business.

We are continuing to make excellent progress to bring supply back to normal levels.

    4. Water has been turned back on after works, but my bathroom taps aren’t working. Why is this?

If supply has returned to your cold kitchen tap, but not the other taps in the house, you may have an airlock. You can find out how to resolve an airlock by visiting our website here.

    5. I am selling my house soon. Do I need to proof of payment of my Irish Water bills?

Prior to the passing of the Water Services Bill in November 2017 if you sold your home, you were obliged to ensure that all household water charges were paid. Irish Water then issued a Certificate of
Discharge to you so the sale could be completed.

The Water Services Bill 2017 removes the requirement to have paid household water charges to Irish Water and provide evidence of same before selling a home.

If you have such a payment previously this will be refunded to you in full, regardless of the date of payment.

Please contact your solicitor or representative or contact us on 1850 448 448 if you any queries or concerns.
