Handbrake failure

Fiat punto 2005, 1.2 petrol, Car failed nct on park brake imbalance of 89% and the park brake performance was 15% with the minimum being 16% for test. Just wondering will new brake shoes solve this or is there a bigger problem? Tightened the cable on it before the test but it still isn’t able to stop the wheels fully when handbrake pulled, if moving along in 1st gear. Any help appreciated

    Slacken cable.

    Tighten brake shoes within drum

Then take slack out of cable. Do not tighten cable.

Loads of videos on YouTube to help.

Tightening cable is a misunderstanding of how system works

    +1.

You need to adjust each wheel separately, only then can you remove any slack in cable system

Slacken the cable, replace the shoes, give the pedal a few pumps, allow a few days driving for the shoes to bed in and you’re sorted.

I don't think I ever replaced shoes where is was quite that simple, but lets see how the OP gets on with it. :)
