How to tell principal that you are moving schools?

I’m (very excitedly) taking a place in boarding school in September for 5th and 6th year. I need to inform my current school before Easter, as they have said to my year group that they want to know class numbers for next year by then.
My parents are planning to either send a formal letter to my principal or have a meeting with her. My principal is very featherheaded and I’m sure it would be near impossible to get her to sit down for my parents.

My question is- what is the best method to inform the school that you are leaving?

My child moved schools after TY.
I made an appointment to see the principal as I felt better saying it to her personally rather than in writing. However, this was a small enough school where the principal would know most of the parents.
I’m sure the principal would like to know why you are moving.
