looking up penalties for driving on the hard shoulder, I could only find one for motorway hard shoulders(1point and 80quid)

What rules apply to a national road like the N7?
any one get done for this before?
I know common sense should be enough not to be on it as it's not a lane for traffic but whats the offence?

    could be two circumstances here
    1. your pulling a trailer or driving very slowly and you want to let the traffic behind you pass
    2. your sitting in traffic and your exit is 1km away so you fly up the shoulder indicating left until you reach the exit

Did you get stuck in the tailback after the multiple car crash yesterday?
The number of cars, buses and commercial vehicles flying up the hard shoulder (at least a mile from the next exit) was unreal. No excuse for it. I was in the overtaking lane which was moving marginally quicker. Passed a tanker in the driving lane that obviously had enough of people speeding passed on the hard shoulder and he decided to block it. There was a huge queue of cars stuck in the shoulder after him. Not ideal if an ambulance needed to get through.

    1. Why would you pull over on a dual carriage way to allow other vehicles pass? There's a 2nd lane for that.

    2. On multi lane roads we should start calling them emergency lanes like some other countries so people realise that they are for emergency services to get to the incident quickly to help the injured and clear the incident, not for you to get home 5 minutes earlier. Even on single lane roads you are only supposed to dip in to allow faster traffic past and not continuously drive in it.

thankfully wasnt stuck in that Songog

Del, I agree point 1 apllies more to one lane roads than dual cariages
The hard shoulder is obviously there for the resons you have pointed out and to allow you in case of an emergency to pull over out of the way of other traffic

I am more insterested in the technicality of the offence, rather that the obvious reasons for not using the hard shoulder

There is no offence for driving in non motorway hard shoulders per se, however, depending on the circumstances you could be done for a number of other offences such as overtaking on the left, dangerous overtaking, driving without due care and consideration or even dangerous driving.

In countries with much more utilizied motorway network, the emergency services try not to use the hard shoulder anymore. It was too dangerous.

Now it is so called 'Rescue Corridor' (ger. Rettungsgasse) - and it is behaviour required by law motorways in Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc.

imagine trying to introduce this in ireland...... insurance prices would double after the first year
great idea though, everyone your passing is 100% aware you are coming so they wont swing out in front of you

You'd have hoped that the blues and two's would do that, but that would require the drivers to get off their phone to notice.
