You are not permitted to drive on the motorway with a learners permit. Full stop.

You can however, drive on non-motorway roads (e.g. N roads) as long as you are accompanied by a qualified driver. There are alternative routes to Dublin that don’t involve motorways.

The girlfriend can't be accompanying driver though if she doesn't hold a full licence for at least 2 years.

    Get a bus or train.

    01:00
    03:30
    05:30
    08:30
    10:30
    12:30
    13:30
    15:30
    17:30

Google maps will show you how to get there without using the motorway.

If she's not able to drive then she isn't fit to be your accompanying driver.

If she's not fit to drive I'm not sure she could be fit to be your accompanying driver either.

Also if girlfriend is not permitted to drive due to medical reasons, would this also prevent her from being an accompanying driver, regardless of her years driving?

You cannot drive on the motorway legally so don't. There are alternative routes. If you must drive, take one. Do not use the motorway!

If you were stopped by Garda, car impounded, a fine, penalty points, a possible court appearance and a possible driving ban.

The problem is, you can't. No learners on motorway. Take the bus or train, as she may not be permitted to accompany you anyway, even on N roads, due to her medical reasons.

As a learner, not even worth it, it will be alot more that the train or the bus. Plus you will have increased insurance premiums straight away, as companies will consider you a risk.

I don’t, but you’re asking a very naive question here.

When you have to ask about driving on the motorway as a learner, and possible problems you may encounter, no offense, but your experience is little.

Would imagine it's the same as if she had been drinking which would make her unable to be the accompanying driver.

It’s not about how smart I am. Dying or being injured is a very real consequence of making a mistake when driving. Inexperience amplifies that (though don’t treat that as an absolute)

You’ll have to request a close from the forum mods. Use the Report Post function to request it. Please note though that mods don’t have to grant it.

    Ignoring the rude OP.

Has that law been brought in yet where the owner of the car gets done for allowing a learner driver to use their car?

Not yet. Believe it's coming in with drink driver change etc.

    Worst?

Inexperienced driver on a motorway crashing and causing injury. Especially as you get to the m50 which is daunting for many experienced drivers.

Or, if obvious you are not a good driver, get stopped, possibly not permitted to drive further, possibly have car towed away.

Far too many risks and with a quick and well priced bus service available, you would be just crazy to do it.

I'm a very experienced driver (32 years, no accidents and min 50,000 km a year) - if I were in tralee and needed to get to Dublin airport, my own first choice would be the airport bus. I even use it from Kildare, cos the hassle of traffic, parking, tolls etc is a pain in the ass compared to sitting back and letting someone else drive

You may get alot of points as your insurance will not be valid as you are not allowed to drive on motorway last i hear its 5 points for no insurance and court could be more then fine not sure on cost. But it may not stop there gardai may have more powers and more points so not worth it. As they will do full check on car condition and if its not taxed they take car away so make sure tax is valid if you go at all.

Fingers crossed its a car impounding, fine, points, ban......and a missed flight.
