    Hi,

If I received a 3rd learners permit by booking a driving test online and showing the evidence of the booking to the RSA, but then I didn't end up going ahead with the driving test, and my 3rd provisional expired after 12 months, and then I let another year or so pass and went back in to apply for a 4th learners permit and showed evidence of having a test booked again, despite not actually following through with sitting the previous test when on my 3rd learners permit, would this be allowed? Hopefully ye follow what I mean, thanks for the help in advance :)

You will only get a learner permit for one year by following this approach. However if you were to show evidence of a failed test whilst on your previous permit you would get a renewal for 2 years.

It depends what you mean by "not going ahead with the test" - if you postponed it more than twice or if you no-showed for a test then, as above, you go online and 'book' a fresh driving test (although you won't be issued an appointment, you can use the booking to renew your permit).

If you managed to make a test 'booking' but were never issued an appointment, then for whatever reason (eg failed to complete EDT lessons), then the original 'booking' would still stand and you can simply renew for a year.

OP any reason why you don't wish to sit the test?

Because I have never driven a car but on the other hand I don't want to have to start the whole process over again when I do decide to learn, starting with the theory test etc. and be bound by the requirements of a minimum amount of hours and money spent on lessons etc (which came in a few years back).

    Anyway:

You could book a test, get your 3rd licence, defer twice, let the licence expire, can you then go back to get another (4th) 12 month provisional at a later date (say a year later), with evidence of a new booking for a test, despite saying that when they gave you the 3rd provisional but you never followed through with it that last time....? Thanks :)

There's two options for you OP.

    1) use the learner permit to learn to drive and get a full licence. This will also be easier for renewing once every 10 years as opposed to every year and avoid all the hassle. Plus it's a great thing to have if you ever want a car of your own.

    2) don't bother. Throw your learner permit away and forget about it, you may never need a car. If you want to drive in the future worry about it then but who knows what learning battles will be there then !

Those are not the only two options, I have outlined another (and preferred) option above, I just want to know if that plan would not work for any technical reason. Thanks.

Yes- My fourth learner permit was expired for four and a half years and I just booked a test, made an appointment with the NDLS and got it renewed with a fifth one-year permit.

If it's expired anything less than 5 years, you don't have to start again from scratch.

There should be a deposit system for driving tests to weed out the 'no shows' as it's very unfair to the others who make genuine applications. If I had any clout in the system, I'd add a €500 deposit on top of the other costs. If you don't turn up, you lose your €500. If you take the test and pass or fail, you get it back.

Thanks for the reply, but did the ndls know when you went to apply for a 4th licence that you had sat a test at some stage before that and failed it, during say your second or third licence, if that is what happened..? Because if so that would be different to my situation.. thanks.

You already lose your fee of 85 euro for a no show. Or you can defer online for free twice, but that's done several weeks in advance so that it gives them enough time to schedule another test for your slot.

It's obviously not enough of a deterrent though as the problem has being going on for years.

I've never sat a test, that's why I just got a one year licence. :)

I've also never just not shown up for a test, I would cancel it, giving at least a month's notice to ensure another applicant got the slot instead.
