Up to 100 megs refers to their VDSL service, but 12mbps refers to the max speed of ADSL1.

It's pretty minimal. It's sufficient for most things, it's enough for Netflix's HD level of quality. But that's assuming you're getting the full 12 mbps possible, since that's still held hostage by line length and quality. Do you know how distant your exchange is?

It entirely depends on what you want to use it for.

For general use (browsing, email etc.) and the odd streaming video etc. for one person it's plenty.

But if you've multiple people in the household, heavily using the broadband, then it can be tight.

As for paying for 100 Mbit/s or not, it's not the speed you're paying for. It's the broadband line. The speed is defined on what infrastructure is in place. Even on VDSL it's defined as up to, because the speed is depending on the line quality. That doesn't change the price.

The exchange is approx 500m away by road from my front door!!!

Usage would be 2-3 devices, browsing, also netflix, youtube, and xbox live....

    Max on ADSL1 is 7.2 Mbit/s. Max on ADSL2 is 24 Mbit/s. Max on VDSL is 100 Mbit/s.

So based on the 12M, you're on an ADSL2 exchange with a half crap phone line. Either that, or the cable run isn't straight to your home but takes a long detour around town.

Could get tight, it's fine for 1 person. But if you have 3 people streaming at the same time, you'll get into trouble. Or if your XBox is blocking the line for a long time downloading a game.

At the end of the day, as long as you know this, it's no problem. You get, what you get, until another provider maybe is able to offer you something better.

Any provider that is using the same phone line to deliver to you will be the same.

So unless you have choices of alternative providers (Virgin, Fixed Wireless providers), that offer more speed. Then it is.

A lot of people only have 2-3 Mbit/s.

It's down to what your expectations are and what technology is available to you. The choice is yours.

So I checked fibrerollout.ie and according to the map there is a live fibre cabinet in my estate.... the information on the linespeed I received from Eir themselves.... how can there be a fibre cabinet in the estate and yet they tomd me the linespeed woukd be up to 12mbps!!

The linespeed where I was was 100(ish)mbps which why I am so apprehensive about 12!!

Either your line is really crap (if it comes from that cab - that can happen) or they have quoted you the line speed on the old ADSL2 exchange and your line still needs to be migrated.

Worst case, try another provider, that offers VDSL on OpenEIRs platform. Eir customer service or sales people are not known for always looking at all options or being flexible.

This might sound like a very stupid question to more tech savvy people but how if there is a live fibre cabinet 100m from my door, I cant get fibre to my house, and the best linespeed will be up to 12mbps?

Does this mean the cabinet is there but they never bothered laying new cables??

Apologies if that is a stupid question!!

First of all, VDSL or eFibre or FTTC is not fiber to your house. It's fiber to the cabinet. It's still copper from the cabinet to your door.

Eir just try to sell is by using the term fibre.

Also, just because you have the fibre cabinet nearby doesn't mean, that your line goes through it. It can often be migrated though, but they won't have test results until that actually is done. They work of existing test results.

If he was on that cab then the prequal would show it. When the cab is installed the cross patch is put in on the CCP and thus the MTAU can test it.

What a 12Mb result most likely indicates is
    A) You're on a different cab further away (About 1800m)
    or
    B) You're on no cab but the local exch instead (about 2.4km)*

    * this happens due to legacy cabling design such as the house predating the estate/postdating the estate, a dwelling that was split in two etc etc.
