It’s important this action was covered and documented. It will also serve to remind people of the governments complete inaction on the issue since it happened.

After hours is gonna love this one. Eyeroll implied.

Oh great, a doc celebrating a bunch of people who broke into a building and occupied it with big plans that went nowhere and is widely considered to have been a complete and utter failure. The whole homes, not hostels thing is great in theory but who's going to pay for it, there's a movement at the minute headed up by the usual suspects in which they are calling for all repossessions to be stopped and people let keep the home they aren't paying a mortgage on, no more selling to vulture funds, the government to build 10,000 homes a year and other populist nonsense. But none of the people calling for it has any ideas on how it can be done, much like Apollo House. They had a nice idea but no long-term plans or impact, based on the trailer for this it looks like another vehicle for some celebs to pat themselves on the back and say "look at how great I am".

Why is it that the words "Songs by Glen Hansard" feels like a threat?

They didn’t have a plan, I agree. But nobody does. It’s a symptom of our time. Everyone knows the system is broken, but nobody has any real idea of what to replace it with or how to achieve it. Traditionally the left would offer an alternative, but whatever bit of a left we had in this country gave up years ago leaving us with these champagne socialists and radical liberals. Hard to build back up from nothing, especially without any credible leadership or vision in a very conservative country. Publicity stunt it may have been but it was better than nothing.

That said, this documentary seems deeply misjudged to me. Hopefully the trailer is not an accurate representation of what it's like... but it probably is.

Without getting into it too much the point of this is to remind people that Coveney and the government at the time made promises almost in blood both to the organisers and public at large and didn’t deliver at all on any of them. Renaged on almost every promise in fact.
The point of that action was in the same year we celebrated the cenenary of 1916 and a group of Irish radicals taking over a building to strike a blow for freedom, they were doing the same thing to make an equally important point.

I know for a fact It backfired wildly in a lot of ways and still costs and haunts people like glen but better they did it than did nothing at all.

Darko mentioned it all being a backslapping excecise? Backlash more like. No idea of the backlash both public and private, and at the same time the countless Irish noteworthy and capable of helping effect change down to tv3 zelebs get a pass for doing and saying *nothing at all* all get a pass for shutting up.

Gas part is this film is playing at a number of major international film festivals and it’s going to embarrass us all and then we will claim we supported Apollo and fvck the government greedy bastards etc.

It will make the point it has set out to. Uncomfortable viewing for us all but tough ****

It will embarrass no one, show me one country in the world in which homelessness isn't an issue. Ireland at least strives to do something about it. The whole thing feels like a way for Glenn Hansard to pat himself on the back for a job well done. Apollo house did nothing to help the homeless situation, it just allowed a few celebs to look like they care and feel good. I have a lot of issues with the government but until the left can offer a tangible solution they really can't take the high ground. So far the left have the great idea of build more houses, great but I don't see Glenn Hansard and the like putting money up. It's all well and good to scream that we need to build more but where's the money coming from, and please do t say the Apple taxes.

Can you show me where Ireland’s government are ‘doing something about it’ ?
Cos I can show you annual reports and thanks going years back from Simon community Peter Mcverry and focus Ireland of Glen giving money from the ndless gigs to help those actually trying to help and do something about it.

This isn’t about that guy. It’s about government inaction on the issue. That’s what this film is doing. There isn’t any backslapping going on. All anyone who tries to help gets is ****, as evidenced in your posts.

So it isn't the government housing the homeless and proving support but it is brave souls like Hansard that are? I get the impression that you are friendly with Hansard given your post and use of Glen, more power to you but please tell me what ideas he has to end the issue. And if it's build more house like he was saying last year then please, tell us where the money to do so will come from? I know someone working for the council and he must be lying to me about how he helps find shelter for people who present as homeless, big liar has told me loads of things he does as part of his job to support homeless people when really it's Glen who is doing all the work

Darko. It isn’t Glen Hansard job to build houses or accommodate homeless people or families being made homeless by our banks every day. It’s our governments job. And they aren’t doing it at all.

If you have a better idea I’d love to hear it. And I mean that.

It's not the governments job to build them houses either, there is this nonsense idea in this country that you are entitled to a house so we have situations where people present homeless and then turn down an apartment or house as it's not in an area they want. No one said that it was Hansard's job but he seems to have a lot of opinions on how it's being done wrong but then no ideas how it can be fixed. Why should someone who does not keep up their mortgage payments be entitled to a free house from the government? We live in a country where there are people not making any effort to pay their mortgages and when facing eviction we have mobs of idiots defending them and their right to a house. Where is all this money for these houses coming from, should they raise taxes or cut back on spending on hospitals?
