Hoping someone can help. Car is Octavia 1.9tdi

Failed the NCT yesterday and today when driving I hit another problem.

Well actually it started two days ago noticed a weird engine noise and couldn't figure out what it was, sounded like something plastic hitting off something hollow (might not be the best description ever sorry).

I parked up and left the engine running but couldn't figure out the noise or where exactly it was coming from, was near the driver's side in the engine.

Noise stopped and I thought the NCT might catch whatever it was...but it didn't....anyway long story short noise came back today and I spotted a loose piece shredded off the Drive belt.

Belt still looks good and not weak despite this part hanging off and hitting off everything around it. Either way I want to replace it but I suppose I'm wondering is it safe to drive. I cut the part off (picture attached) and the noise stopped, I'm confident it was the noise as I tested hitting it off parts near the drive belt and it made similar, be it much less, noise. Obviously when engines in full flight it would louder and moving much faster.

Any thoughts on causes? and again is it safe to drive for a while?

It would be safe to drive to the nearest garage alright but I wouldn't pop in and out of town and such before going to the garage. The only journey should be straight to a garage.

The main danger is if it snaps the water pump will not function and you risk overheating the car. Personally the only driving I would do is to take it to somewhere to fix it. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge but no telling when it could snap, could be on a quite street, could be on a motorway.

Thank you both, was kind of thinking that but just when I seen how small the piece was that came off I thought it may not be absolutely immediate attention, reason I asked was I have booked it in with a mechanic I know in Cavan for Saturday to fix the few NCT parts but I live in Drogheda so now getting there will be a problem...also not many mechanics will be free probably to do it first thing tomorrow

Well you can go to that garage to fix all the other stuff and go to the nearest garage to fix the belt. It would only take them a few minutes to change the belt.(That is most cars anyway depending on car and engine it may take longer)

Yea I'll ring around in the morning first thing and see if someone will see me, to be honest timing belt and water pump are due a change so if someone offers to do it I may get it all done sure! They'll hopefully take the business.

Just an update, brought it round to the garage this morning and thing was a lot more mangled than I could see, also found a larger piece of the belt on my driveway.

Thanks again all for the heads up, appreciate the advice, by the looks of it if I had driven much more the thing would have snapped, also looks like parts of it may have wrapped in with the timing belt so that was due a change too anyway.

€400 euro for new Timing Belt kit with water pump and new driving belt but could have been a whole lot worse.

That was pretty reasonable for the work involved.

I think they ment if it snapped it could flown into the timing belt which could of caused engine damage if it knocked the timing belt off.
