    Hi Folks

I'm starting to look into a hybrid. Looking for a 4wd and would appreciate any feedback/opinions on the best make/models out there?

Ideally I'd like to buy second hand but I'm open to brand new if it makes more sense.

    Budget anywhere from 10-30k range.

    Cheers

Toyota Rava 4. Lexus NX and RX. Mini Countryman hybrid. I think the BMW 2 series tourer also has hybrid all wheel drive.

Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid available too. Second hand at that money though.

    Lexus UX.

Always thought that was a 2wd soft roader. Very cheap to import from UK i think.

Nope, 4WD and drives better on tougher terrain than the diesel. Tow rated as well.

My wife has Mini Countryman hybrid, it was only released last year, so I’d suspect its out of budget. TBi is right, the mini, 2 series active tourer hybrid (and the i8!) all share the same 4 wheel drive set up.

It’s worth noting that the front wheels are driven by the petrol engine (1.5 turbo - 134 bhp) and the rears by the electric motor (89 bhp) - there’s only a 7.6 kWh battery, so you can quickly run down the battery and be left largely with a fwd car. You can manage when the battery is used, but it’s not huge.

It really comes down to what you need, if it’s a hybrid with occasional 4 wheel drive and/or with the occasional bust of power, it’s great. But if you need 4 wheel drive for an extended run it’s not the drive train for you.

The best one available that is a proper 4x4 is the Outlander PHEV. IMO.

From £12k in the UK. Pretty good value at that.
