Bit of tooth/bone stuck in gum after extraction

Noticed a week after my (costly!) extraction that there was a bump on the outside of the gum - I just assumed till now that it was just part of the healing process. But Dr Google suggests that it's actually a bit of broken tooth or bone from the extraction process - it certainly feels very hard so this makes sense...

So... Is this just one of those things that can happen with an extraction and I'll have to get it sorted at my own expense? If so, is it a dentist job or periodontist (€€€! Yikes!) job?

    Thanks...

i have the same problem, wisdom tooth was extracted before christmas

wonder if your gums will push this piece out over time(if its not in too deep)? like the way you skin does when you get a splinter?

following anyway to see the answer

    It happens sometimes...

A very loose piece of bone is rarely left in the socket, but if it was, it would likely come out itself over time.

More likely you have a prominent piece of buccal or lingual bone.
This is either a problem or not...

The jaw bone that the tooth was in will naturally have a convex bulge of bone where the tooth emerged from the gum/bone. When the tooth is taken out, this bone remains, the gum then heals over it. Sometimes, despite the gum healing over it, this prominent piece of bone under the gum feels bulky and causes the gum over it to feel tender or worse still causes the gum to ulcerate at that point.
Options here are to let the area naturally resorb and the body's own healing will slowly take care of it...

The other senario is where the thin plate of bone is cracked on removal of the tooth (again it happens) and this fractured plate of bone is prominent and sharp causing pain...
Again, the options are to wait and let it resorb away or more likely in this case to open the area and smooth it surgically....

I do thousands of extractions per year and have to deal with something like this once/twice a year, I wouldn't charge extra for it.... if you need to be referred then that might be different...

    ...

I think you might be right... It certainly doesn't feel like a loose small bit of tooth or bone!

I'll let it a while and see what what develops in next few weeks as the whole site heals a bit more...
