Hi Guys . I have a problem in my house with tenants excessively using the oil heating system . I have one tenant who stays up late till like 4 am and has the heating going in the house. I have had to get up and turn it off. Usually he is drunk and agressive . Please help

You do not need a lock, you need new tenants

How is the heating controlled OP? What switches / thermostats do you have?

Is it just a thermostat on the wall or is there a time clock attached to it or located at some other point.

Let us know what you have and we can tell you what you need to disconnect / adjust. It's probably a fairly small job.

BUT - you should NOT have a drunk aggressive person in your house. Are you renting him a room in your own house? I'm no expert but if this is the case it should be fairly easy to remove him.

Have a look at the accommodation forum. He is not a tenant. The laws are different for licensees.

Hes not a tennant hes a licencee totally different thing you can get rid of him with a reasonable amount of notice. Reasonable could be 24 hours or a month who is to say.

we have these in work on AC control units. I suspect they will not be much protection against somebody determined to put the heating on tho

Aggressive man comes home from work, drinks a few cans, gets drunk, feels cold, goes to put on heating.....its locked. That'll end really well.

Served him notice for 1 month from today . Still installing lock for future tenants. My house is very well insulated and doesnt need this heat on . And especially at 5am .

Might be an idea to find someone who works similar hours to you, can't see how its unreasonable for someone who pays bills/rent including bills in a house to put the heating on during hours they are awake. Im sure you have the heat on at 8pm, when it suits you.

Buy a password protected thermostat. As far as I know the Nest thermostats can be locked. I'm sure there are others.

It will give you exclusive control and save you money at the same time.

It's an expensive up front cost though.

Posts like this come across so trolltastic.. it's hard to believe you're not trolling...

Anyway.. if you are renting a room in your own home which has shared areas (that is, it isn't a bedsit), the guy doesn't have tenancy rights.

Tell him you want him out. If you want him out, that is. Otherwise, before he's drinking explain that the central heating is on a timer and he isn't permitted to touch it. It would be reasonable to extend the time a little given the cold spell.. perhaps til midnight rather than 11pm for example.

If he can't agree to those rules, give him reasonable notice. During this time, prepare to leave the heating on longer to keep the peace. If you're still having problems with him or he's acting threatening, you'll need to kick him out much sooner.
