Xbox 360 controller

Trying to get an old Xbox 360 controller to work with my Windows 10 laptop. Thought it should be plug and play but isn't working. When plugged in it appears in devices as Xbox 360 controller and device manager is saying drivers are up to date but if I run joy.cpl it isn't recognising any controller connected.

Probably an easy fix but I can't figure it out. Any one seen this before/know how to fix it?

Are you using a wired controller or a wireless controller with the play and charge kit? The wireless one needs a separate dongle.

Wireless with the play and charge lead. Do you mean it won't work plugged in at all just with the wireless dongle?

Did you try installing the latest 360 controller drivers? i had numerous problems with my 360 controllers with Win 10, even worse with Xbox One controllers ironically.

Tried updating drivers through device manager and checking for Windows update. I could only see drivers for Windows 7 and earlier on Microsoft site. It said newer versions or Windows should auto install new drivers.

I thought that the play and charge lead was only for charging and that the 360 controller still needed the receiver to work on pc ?

This could be my problem. The battery pack gave up working years ago but it still worked in Xbox plugged in so hoped the same on pc.

Can anyone else confirm this?

My completely wired xbox 360 controller works with no issue but the second one i have the the play and charge kit doesnt so I reckon thats the problem tbh.

Yes, you need the Wireless Gaming Receiver for a wireless controller to work on PC.



The official one is £20 on Amazon, but you can get a generic one from China (AliExpress, eBay) for <€10. I've a generic one and it has worked fine for a good few years.

Another fiver for the dock if you want to go one step further. I've the xbox one version (using controllers for PC) and it's handy/tidy dropping controllers on the dock after a session.
