    Hi all,

I'm looking to start some flash photography, portraits mainly. New baby has arrived and she provides a test subject that cannot complain too much :D

I want to do it on a budget, I'm a newbie really.

I was looking at this one by Apeman. Reviews suggest it's grand for amateurs and beginners. They do one that's a tenner more expensive that has TTL but I am not sure if that's worth it?

I also wanted to experiment with placing the flash somewhere other than on top of my camera so I was looking at this wireless trigger, again (very) cheap and cheerful.

I have a 1300D. Does anyone know of any pitfalls of these flashes and triggers? If I get a non-TTL flash can I only use my camera in fully manual mode? I understand I'd have to set the flash manually.

    Thanks!

TTL is well worth a tenner.
Be careful in your expectations from a remote trigger. Most don't pass through TTL information, so they're remotely triggered dumb flashes.
At that price I wouldn't expect built-in radio triggering etc...

Yonguo makes flashes that can work with the TTL on your camera and be remotely triggered. (Several others do too) at a good price.

    Good luck!

I don't think I'd be too worried about TTL via the trigger for now. If I am going to the hassle of setting up the flash off-camera I don't think I mind having to manually figure out what settings to use for the correct exposure.

    That sounds plausible, right? :pac:

    Yes.

I've a "dumb" Yongnuo and find it just grand. Pair it with Laada batteries from Ikea which are cloned Eneloop Pros and you have a real winner.

If you thing you'll ever use the flash in dark environs like clubs etc then get one with a IR illuminator to prefire for AF purposes.

Check out the Godox range of flashes. Very good quality, with good features and good prices. The TT350 is their more "entry level" flash but it is well featured and can be used as a trigger for OCF later on if you get a more powerful (V860ii or AD200) flash to complement it.

    +1 for Godox.
I've been using the Nikon flashes for years (at great expense!!) but I'm a recent convert to Godox and can't praise them enough.
