Hi I just purchased a 2016 car with zero previous owners on the log book and noticed it was registered to a lease company. It’s in great condition. Mileage is a bit higher than average. It also has no service history. Would this have been a rental car or company car? Why would it have no service history?

How did you buy a car without finding this info out from the seller, how.gareth?

Perhaps it was never serviced, unlikely but possible. Did you notice any dealer branding on the number plates or service stickers inside the drivers door, perhaps you could contact them to see if there's any history for that car.

I was told it had 1 previous owner which was the truth I suppose. It’s the exact car we wanted and ticked plenty of boxes so these issues woulnt have been a deal breaker to be honest, just curious as to how or why a lease company wouldn’t fill out the service book on a brand new car

No haven’t noticed any service stickers. We only bought it the day of the start of the snow so haven’t really even seen it properly yet, it’s in excellent condition in and outside and was serviced by the dealer before we bought it but the only other stamp is the running in service

What car is it and what mileage is on it? It may not have needed a service?

1.5 diesel focus, 40k miles, I’m sure it should have had a few oil changes at least by now

The service book is gone because it is clocked

Any lease company will service the cars as it is cheaper to keep serviced than fixing repairs

I would guess double or triple your 40k and you will have real mileage

    That's a bit of a leap?

A little unusual for a leasing company here to source a new car from the uk. I know some van leasing company sourced Vauxhall vans from the north so anything’s possible I guess.

Do you know which leasing company it was?

I have the service book, it only has the running in service stamp

I’ll have to check the log book again, the original Uk reg and dealer it was bought from are in it. The lease company name was definitely it in as well

It was purchased by Sema lease uk in January 2016 and then registered here by Sema lease Ireland in February 2016. The service book says something about a digital service record kept by Ford. Is it possible they kept a service history this way rather than the old fashioned stamps?

Very. My mother in law has a 2017 1.5 diesel Focus and the service record is online only.

Cheers. I’ll give Ford a bell on Monday and see if they can shed some light on it’s history

My 2014 car has a digital service history, it's nothing new.

Can you access it online yourself or how does it work if you sold the car?

Not sure how it works with Ford but I would imagine it's similar to BMW where once it stays with the main dealer then a quick call to them will get the info on the car. My car also has it logged in the car's onboard computer and displays a service log of when it was done and at what mileage, similar to stamping the service book. The premium have been doing this for a good few years now so no surprise it's filtering down the more mainstream brands as it helps deter clocking and false service histories.

It's accessible by the dealer. Independent workshops that have signed up can also view and update it.

Any dealer will give you a printed copy of the details if you ask. It's a deterrent against clocking and also cuts a cost by putting service books and manuals online.
