I am sorry if this is in the wrong place. I was hospitalised last week with a hemoglobin of 5.1 ... After soon tests they found I have fibroid ( I have endometriosis and always had heavy periods but been a bit extreme for a few months). I had a blood transfusion and will be going on medication to try shrink the fibroid for 3 months.
My Hemoglobin was 8.1 and they let me go home on Thursday.

I am wondering if anyone has information about how long it may take to feel much better and any good ideas on how to improve my haemoglobin naturally. Ill be seeing my GP and going onto Iron tablets etc on Monday.

Not an expert but I understand that to recover from anemia caused by heavy bleeding you need to reduce the bleeding and increase the iron level. Presume you've been given something to reduce the bleeding, and also iron tablets. It could be months.

Your GP really should be referring you to a gynaecologist if your anemia is that bad. I had haemoglobin levels of 7.5 and ended up needing a full hysterectomy. It might not be the only option for you (my fibroid was the size of a rugby ball & weighed 5kg) but you definitely should ask for a gynaecologist referral if it's that low. They can give you medication to reduce the bleeding first, maybe shrink the fibroid if necessary, and plenty of doctors who can perform fibroid removals (myectomy) via keyhole surgery if it comes to that.

Thanks for your reply. They have found out the source of the bleeding.. its a fibroid and I have started on medication to try to reduce it. I am hoping that will work as I would like to have a baby and avoid a hysterectomy.

I am on iron tablets and getting vitamin b12 injections weekly (had my first last week). I was hoping that the recovery would be faster and that I would be feeling better already! I am feeling a bit better then I was when I was hospitalised and I guess the blood transfer helped... it brought my haemoglobin up from 5.1 to 8.1. I would love to know how long it will take to improve it enough that I don't feel tired getting out of bed/.

I had iron infusions at the hospital. I felt they were great but they took about a month to kick in. If i recall i got a 3 point bump in my hemoglobin with them.

Eventually i went with the hysterectomy, i simply couldn't deal with the tiredness and bleeding. I also had ITP in the past so it was an easy choice for me, as my platelet count was good at the time.

Low hemoglobin is exhausting. I totally understand and wish you the best of luck with the treatments. Rest and recover, look after yourself, it's painful and frustrating and mentally exhausting too.
