Temporary Internet Options for Unwired apartment

    Hello,

    1. I recently moved into a new apartment.
    2. Vodafone couldn't install the internet. They gave me no concrete answer. Gave up on them.
    3. I then got Virgin Media out and we couldn't find the connection from my apartment down to the main room with all the wires in the block. The virgin media guy tried for hours. He reckons my apartment may not have ever been connected to the internet.
    4. As a last resort I am going to try with Eir as they have a different set of wires apparently. It may take them a few weeks to come. (Delayed installation due to bad weather and I am out of country for a week or two.)

In the meantime what is my best option for getting the internet? Hoping Dublin city center is open tomorrow and I can go and get something. I am a heavy user and have a lot of IOT devices so ideally want to broadcast WiFi in my apartment (as opposed to a dongle.)

    1. I have the new macbook so if I am forceid to get a broadband dongle - I will need a dongle for the broadband dongle (sigh) but this doesn't meet my requirement above.

    2. I am hoping Eir goes successfully so just want something temporary.

    3. I can't tether anymore from my mobile. Bill is going to be huge.

(I tried my neighbours as well but they don't have internet yet so can't split cost with them. :/ )

As above. Just go to three and get a pay as you go Simmons either a wireless WiFi spot or the cheapest 4g enabled phone they have and use that as a hotspot. Or use your current phone as a hotspot.

    As ED E pointed out.

It's the prepaid (voice) SIM he's talking about. Not the prepaid data ones.

Kieran01 I am in the exact same situation as you. Let me know if you find a suitable solution

AYCE data plan for Three specifies that this is a handset only fix. I've been reading about people getting ridiculous charges for doing this, and AYCE is not really all you can eat, as they can limit (and I dont know if they charge you) if you exceed 60 GB
Thats what I found on the t&c's

Three continuously monitors network performance to ensure that the service received by customers is not impacted through a minority of users placing high demand on network resources (e.g. large bandwidths over long periods). Should your data usage exceed 60GB in a 28 day period and your usage affect other network users, we reserve the right to limit your All you can Eat Data Service.
The All You Can Eat Data Service is available for use with your Three SIM Card in your Three handset only. Tethering or use of the Three handset as, or the SIM in conjunction with, a modem is not allowed and may be disabled.

AYCE on prepay is literally AYCE, Three do not monitor usage at all.

You can use the prepay phone sim in a cheap 4g phone using the hotspot option or in a mobile wifi modem no problem, you might just have to put it into a phone and make a call or send a text to activate the sim, but otherwise it will work perfectly.

They certainly don't hide the fair usage policies, for one of the operators currently with a advert campaign on the radio at the end they state the 60GB limit and they have a right to limit traffic if it goes above this if its impacting others in the area.

That maximum they could charge is €20, its a prepay account. You're hearing total irrelevant stuff about bill shock on billpay accounts.

People would do well to read a few more posts before contributing as this has been laid out at least 100x on boards.

    - I got the Huawei device
    - I got the ACYE sim
    - Dude said in the shop that if I want to continue using AYCE I will need to get a new 20e SIM as they'll "find out" when I try to top up.

Thanks everyone. Will keep you posted.

How is it working for you? I am getting mine tomorrow, I'll be fine using it just on the phone but being able to share the data with my laptop and watch Netflix on it would be great. How did you find it??
