Travelling on frozen land?

    Thinking out loud here....

Has anyone ever topped land that was frozen over?

I have a few acres of rushes I didn't get topped last year due to the all the rain we had. Land is in Glas and I was thinking of heading out with a 5'6 disc mower on Saturday while land is frozen?

Would this damage the mower? Is it a realistic idea?

I can't imagine travelling on frozen grass would do any harm, or would it?

Frost really hit rushes hard if they are after being cut.It freezes down into there exposed roots. Only issue might be the cover of cut rushes might protect them.

I'll head out so once the blizzard passes. Did you use a topper or mower?

Thinking the topper might be a bit of a risk but would cover twice as much ground..

That's a brilliant idea to get topping done while the ground is frozen.
Am wondering if one could follow with the granular lime to improve our rough ground ??

I was up around north Roscommon on Tuesday and there was a world of rushes freshly cut. It was the first chance lads had since last July.

Was out around 10.30 but the thaw had already started and I had to call it off. Bit disappointed now I didn't go out yesterday, looks like I missed the boat

Contractor was putting out dung next door today when he got a call to go and cut a few fields of grass. About 25 acres that hasn't had a machine or beast on it since August.
Another man about 3 mile across the road made bales in October and they only drew them out of the fields yesterday and have it coated today in about an inch of slurry.

It's an ill wind.... as they say..
