Turn phone off at night- dead in morning & dying at 19%

    Hi,
I have a Xaomi Mi 5s for close to a year now. About 70 apps, including pre installed ones.

    Battery will-
    1. sometimes die when hits 19%
    2. die overnight despite having power left (not sure how much, maybe 30%) and being turned off, no alarm set.

Any way to determine what app(s) are causing this? Currently thinking of removing all apps or doing a factory reset.

    Thanks,
    Pa.

Settings-> battery should show the usage.

But to me it sounds like the battery is goosed. If it is turned off over night and still dying then I don't see how apps could be causing this.

For a phone that's not yet 12 months old & doesn't get heavy usage this shouldn't happen....

I mean that's obvious... but what can I say, the symptoms don't sound good!

What does the battery settings screen say?

Get AccuBattery from the store and itll give you all the info on battery health and wear :)

If a phone ever shuts down like that it means the battery is done.

You would need to run AccuBattery for a few charge cycles with power on to collect accurate information.
If a phone ever shuts down like that it means the battery is done.

Not always the case, there is a bug LineageOS Stock kernel [Kenzo] that cause a shutdown when device get's low in battery.

To see what apps are draining the battery, try Wakelock Detector [ROOT]

But as your phone is draining while off, surely sounds like you have a defective battery, that has worn out quicker than it should.

Have you tried Calibrating the battery? (I know some people say it has no effect and outdated information for modern batteries)

Fix: Xiaomi Mi5 battery drainage – Mobile Internist

Maybe it is time to replace the battery. Search and price around plus look for store and product feedback.

Edit: - removed the links because had post the plus versions.

What version of MIUI are you running and have you ever update the rom on the device. <<<< Just to rule out a vendor rom.

    8.0.10.0.0

Haven't done anything to phone, just updated when updates were available.

If that is what is reported in MIUI Version in about phone, then you have been using a vendor rom and probably has degraded the battery.

    [Q & A] how to upgrade mi 5s global 8.0.10.0.0

Backup your data and important stuff, wipe the device and flash an official rom. See reddit wiki for instructions.

Edit: - WARNING: - As your battery has degraded and can not maintain a good charge, flashing process might be risky.

Can you tell from this if it's on a vendor rom please?

Confirmed it is a vendor rom!

Official Stable ROM will have always 3 DECIMAL POINTS and official Developers (Beta) ROM will always have 2 DECIMAL POINTS.

For example Stable ROM will use 7.5.2.0 but never 7.5.2.0.0 and Developers (Beta) ROM will use 6.5.30 but never 6.5.30.0

    http://en.miui.com/thread-392159-1-1.html

Also applying app updates is totally different to applying OTA/Rom updates.

In Most cases you can not update vendor roms and if on official you would have been prompted to update during your year of use.

This guarantees its the pack, forget software issues. No software is running when its off.

Cell has developed an internal short. Time to replace it. Happens with all OEMs, difference with chinese brands is you wont have replaced for free unfortunately.

Time to replace the phone I presume?
replacing the battery won't be a solution as issue is related to the custom ROM.

phone came with custom rom but I presume I've no comeback with them (https://www.gearbest.com I think).

    Thanks,
    Pa.

I think he meant the battery needs replacing, and you also need to flash official rom.

It is probably a hard battery to find, found versions for Mi 5 and Mi 5S Plus, not sure but I think yours may use the same as Mi 5.

You have 2 Years EU warranty on online purchases, but claiming that and getting support from gearbest for your device is another thing.

The screen has a few cracks so Gearbest would probably use that to say null and void I'd imageine.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-3-85V-3100mAh-For-Xiaomi-BM36-Battery/32712996201.html?

Buy a BM36 such as the above. If experienced at repairs fit yourself, otherwise pay a friend/some chinese shop to do it for you.

    EDIT: *WRONG* One sec.
    EDIT2: Fixed

Thanks. My screen has quiet extensibe web of cracks at top of screen and a few lines extended ding around the screen. If take phone apart to replace the battery I fear the cracks could get much worse. Would i be right?

Maybe not, chinese videos on it look like the back casing is non structural so may come off the front frame without force. Its not a sealed with glass and glue design.

I've seen this issue when I've had phone that's gotten wet or damp. For example, twice I brought a similar age phone skiing, and it's been like that after the trip.

I sent one back to the manufacturer as it was still under warranty and they said there was corrosion on the mainboard due to getting wet or damp.

Have you considered replacing the LCD?

    Example product: - http://www.ipartsbuy.com/view/3149133/iPartsBuy%20Xiaomi%20Mi%205s%20LCD%20Screen%20%20%20Touch%20Screen%20Digitizer%20Assembly%20%20No%20Fingerprint%20Identification%20Black%20.htm

You could probably find cheaper versions on Aliexpress (not as good quailty wise).

If your dissembling the device to replace battery, you might as well repair both.

Don't forget an adhesive layer to glue the new screen in place.

Edit: - Forgot I had already linked the above video earlier in thread!

After you've updated to the official ROM,then try the following.

You might need to "bump change" your phone. Google it and see how you get on with your battery issue.

Unfortunately it won't fix your screen :D
