Gas boiler heater pouring water from external overflow pipe

    Hi,
Early this morning the gas burner in the house turned on like it does daily. After a couple of minutes, it began to make a high pitched whine. I cut off the power to it and noticed that the external copper overflow pipe was pouring water. To stop this, I closed a valve in the hot water tank press.
The burner appears to still fire but I havent let it run for more than a few seconds.
Would anyone have any suggestions of what I might be the issue or what I could attempt to repair it? - it willl be pretty difficult to get a hold of a RGI guy or even a plumber in this weather.

Would it be OK to turn the valve back on and let the burner fire again for the next couple of days?

I'm case it matters, there was a small seepage of water internally from the boiler the last few months. There was also a build up of ice on the overflow pipe this morning.

    Thanks for your help!

Thats the safety valve letting water out, probably the expansion vessel needs changing on your heating.

What boiler is it?any pressure gauges on the system?

We're having the same problem. Came down this morning to water gushing out of the boiler into the kitchen. The condensate pipe outside was frozen so we thawed it and the water is now coming through that outside. We tryed to reset the boiler but it won't start. The pressure gauge is at zero.

We managed to fix ours! Just posting in case it helps someone. After defrosting the pipe with warm water we had to reset the emergency pressure relief valve as it was stuck open

Then refill the water filling loop by briefly opening a black valve in the hot press. That brought the pressure in the boiler back up to normal (1.5 bar) and its now working perfectly! I don't know what we would have done without the Internet!

Chickey2, Glad to hear it! It would be terrible to be stuck without heating in this weather, esp when the roads for service people are impassable.

We had some good news here too. I went out yesterday morning and defrosted the overflow pipe, to see if that made a difference. Then, leaving the water valve to the boiler closed, I chances turning on the boiler again for the radiators. It worked! I left it running for a few hours to heat the home and maybe defrost any pipes that may be frozen.
Low and behold, when I turned on the water valve to the boiler it didnt start pouring our through the overflow pipe again!

The gas boiler is a Vokera Mynute 16e by There is a reading of 2.5 bar on the pressure meter.

    Thanks for all your help.

what water valve to the boiler did you turn on..?2.5 bar is too high.if it gets near 3 bar it will leave water out the pressure relief valve whit is connect to the overflow pipe.A picture of the valve you turned on would verify if its ok
