Storm ready and drifting the i3 on ice

Came out this morning to a lot of ice buildup inside the chargeport door.
Luckily I brought a tap cover back from the US the same size as Tom Moloughney used for his i3.

Also finally figured out how to properly disable the traction control through the OBD and after a number of attempts for a few stolen moments today I was able to have some fun getting the the i3 sideways in a Dunnes stores car park.

I played it safe in Eco mode when on the road....but then I had my son in the car, so no messing there. Noticed the street name sign at the entrance to my estate was damaged beyond repair. It was a metal decorative sign mounted on two steel poles. Could see fresh skid marks leading up onto the kerb. The poles had been unearthed by the collision. Someone did some damage to their car, that’s for sure.

This, I don't get. Why would you drive less safely because your son isn't in the car? Even if you're less concerned about your own safety than your son's, don't you have responsibility to other road users?

I have to head out now. Option is eGolf or Galaxy. I know I ain't touching that Galaxy

I have 3 sick kids and a sick wife so no option. The 10 month old needs a doctor. What is the bets I meet a shower of idiots who have nothing better to be at than on the road

Orginal plan was not to leave the house...I would prefer not to

No matter how much pre-heating it wasn't going to shift the snow off my car :p

I'm calm. It was a genuine question though, because your comment made no sense.

It isn't that you'd drive like a lunatic on your own with blatant disregard for other road users, it's that you might find an opportune moment (after assessing the situation and deeming it no risk to anyone else!) to let the car slide for a bit! Worst case scenario, you hit a curb or wall or lamp post at low speeds... but you don't want your kids in the car for that!
There's a difference between the OP having a bit of sideways fun in a snowy car park with TC turned off and acting the pure toolbag on the open roads!

Proper winter tyres make a massive difference. I'll be getting a set for next winter.

From 7 degrees and below Summer tyres become a lot less effective but why risk lives or accidents by driving on tyres that were not designed for driving in cold or ice ?

The trickiest thing with the i3 is getting used to the strong regen on throttle lift, it's like pulling the hand brake.

So you have to back off very gently and can be tiring on the foot.

Driving the Ioniq around the last two days, zero regen and traction control off.

It's been very stable on the snowy roads.

0 regen, surely when you hit the brake pedal you get regen in min regen setting ?

Even if not there's no reason not to have regen.

You get up to 96kW of regen from the brake pedal.
I've turned the regen off that comes from lifting the foot off the accelerator.

Suppose that would make it a wee bit uncomfortable alright.

Anyone know how powerful Regen is in the i3 ? or is it 50 Kw as the limit of charging on DC ?

Very odd that you picked up my post in the first place. The OP talks about disabling traction control and pulling skids in a public car park and you decide to distort what I wrote about taking it easy in the snow? I said I was driving in eco mode and was being extra careful in the car because my son was there. Did I suggest that I would be doing otherwise were he not in the car?

I picked up on it because in my view your original comment was very odd.

I didn't distort it at all. You've just said the same thing again:

You should be as careful as is necessary at all times. If you're being "extra careful" when your son's in the car, that implies you aren't when he's not.

Yes, and as noted above you've just done it again.

Same here. Was no bother at all and I left the traction on. It was fine. Then again, I'm mostly used to driving RWD cars in the snow, so it had to be a lot better than that :D

Oh dear. Well I hope my driving doesn’t cause you to lose any sleep. I tend to be “extra careful” when:

I have kids in the car.

    The weather is bad.

I am on a residential road.

There is an idiot in my proximity.

I am holding a hot herbal beverage.

There are things and circumstances which heighten our awareness to risks and dangers which ordinarily mean we become “extra careful” at those times. I would not think this to be odd. I would think the opposite to be very odd unless your name is Spok.

I'd be the same as goz83.

When I have a 70 year old woman in the car I take extra care than when it's just myself.
I take into account the comfort of my passengers, they don't necessarily have the same tolerance for the pushed back in the chair acceleration, or lateral forces on corners that the car is capable of safely handling.

Seriously ? it feels a lot stronger then even the Leaf in B when you lift off the throttle.

Though I suppose the Leaf regen reduces as the speed decreases which is stupid then you have to hit the brake. Perhaps that's the difference I feel.

Definitely not as strong as the Ioniq for sure.

I do miss an energy monitor in the i3.

I run winter tyres every year, the only problem is that the other 99% of cars that do not run them. I can stop, I have grip, they cannot.

And what's worse is that people in Ireland actually have a right to drive with completely inadequate tyres for Snow and Ice, there's no law that I know to suggest otherwise.

In my opinion no one should have the right to be on a public road on Snow and ICE with Summer tyres !
