Hi im seriously considering dropping out of school after i sit my juniorcert. I suffer with really bad anxiety and it just gets worse when im in school. I feel that if I was to move schools i would feel the exact same way. I understand that education is very important but im looking at it from a mental health point of view. I would happily find work and i reckon i would get work easy as there are many careers in the equine industry (what im interested in) that dont necessarily require a leaving cert. Im looking for peoples opinions and what they think i should do. Thanks in advance !

    Education IS important.

    Mental health is more important.

Why not explore if there are opportunities to continue your education / training and gain a qualification within your area of interest?

It might involve an apprenticeship (for example) rather than a formal Leaving Cert, but ya know something? ... apprenticeships were around centuries before the Leaving Cert was ever devised!

Personally I think it's a pity that they're kinda "unfashionable" these days, they have a lot of positive points and suit some people very well indeed.

Hi I recently dropped out of school. My reason was due to depression but I have had anxiety the past four years and it was particularly bad in 3rd year. Your mental health is so much more important. You need to give yourself some space to think without being worried about school. In your case, I would recommend that you drop out but in 2 years time I would advise you to do your leaving cert as an external candidate. I know the profession your interested in may not need it but the lc is so important for your future . Just think about it but for the time being drop out, your head will thank you for it. x hope this helps:D

Is there a guidance counsellor, or sympathetic teacher in school you could discuss options with?

One possibility might be home schooling if you were up to it. I don't think I'd have had the discipline for self-led learning at that age, though I would now. If you could home school, but with support from the school, could that be an option?

There may be other options out there that you're not aware of, but that a professional could list out for you.

No need to go into medical details here or answer this question, but are you being treated for the anxiety/under the care of a medical professional? If not, that could be a first step. If you are, discuss how things are going with them, and let them know that you're feeling bad enough to drop out of school.

Get some help from a mental health professional. If you are suffering from anxiety then you need to find out what is making you anxious and get assistance to help you resolve the issues causing the anxiety or to cope with the anxiety.

If you are anxious in school then you are likely to be the same in a working environment - many working environments can be very stressful.

As for working in the equine industry - without any qualifications it is low pay, long hours and back breaking work.
