Hi, Has anyone taken a family holiday in Austria? Looking for scenery, adventure sports etc. 3 boys, 11, 13, 15.
What type of family accomodation is generally available?
    Thanks in advance
    Seamus

Hi Have been a few times to Fussen (South Germany, Disney castle) and then taken the 3 hr drive to Salzburg, where Berchtesgaden (Hitlers Eagles Nest), Schönau am Königssee are easily accessible as well as the alps (We stayed in Mailnitz in alps driver through/over Grossglockner).

It was mostly for scenery, mountain walks, sightseeing etc., so I don't know much about the adventure sports etc.

Filghts are through Memmingen(Ryanair) and Munich and there is some driving involved to get to Salzburb and back.

Let me know if you want any more details.

Cycled through with my wife and daughters a couple of years back. Like a cross between Germany and Italy 8-).

AirBnB is a great option for a family - lots of choice, lots of value.

Adventure sports - local tourist office for actual booking, Google for what and where. Certainly kayaking/rafting, via ferrata, walking are all pretty common. Mountain biking (and bike hire) too.

Personally I'd head down near Innsbruck and the Dolomites - those mountains are just super.

We've had several (family) holidays in Austria - Opera Festival in Bregenz last year (shooting location for a key Quantum of Solace) - Salzburg (girls really impressed to see that the Sound of Music locations look exactly like they do in the movie) - Innsbruck (stayed in a really classy city centre hotel, felt positively imperial even though we paid virtually nothing - Vienna (should have been there at the same time as Leo earlier this month, but had a change of plans; hopefully going in May instead) loads of history, amazing palaces, crazy architecture (e.g. Hundertwasserhaus), have stayed there in B&B, campsite, hotel - Grossglockner (glacier) and a 300m climb to the top of the Krimml waterfall in roughly the same area (self-catered in a village called Viehhoffen) - cable-cars and hill walking in the Northern Tyrol, more walking and mountain sports in the Southern Tyrol ... ... ...

So basically everything you could possibly want. The best accommodation depends on what you plan to do - camping/self-catering & car for the central parts of the country; camping/hotel/apartment and public transport for the cities, esp Vienna.
